It is my belief that the foundation for a positive experience in therapy begins with the therapeutic
relationship
.
I enjoy working with clients who are interested in gaining further insight into patterns in their life and who hope to feel empowered to make changes. I believe that times of transition in life, while usually stressful, also provide immense opportunities for growth. I consider it a privilege to work with clients during these times in life and to help them use their resilience as a tool. Some examples of transition periods in life include, but are not limited to: start or end of relationships, death of a loved one, moving, career changes, starting or finishing college, birth of a child, marriage, or divorce.

Trauma blocks love and connection, love heals trauma and restores connection (Dr. Frank Anderson). Healing from trauma creates opportunities to experience love, connection and the goodness inherent in all of us. Counseling is a great way to access these inner resources to permanently heal emotional pain and suffering we all carry from past and current traumatic experiences. As a therapist and scholar with 20+ years of experience I understand we cannot change the past however, I firmly believe we can permanently heal from it.

Life Change Counseling is about a person's right to live in autonomy and move past any situation that caused them to doubt, become shameful, or harbor guilt around their part. Recovery is a process of having someone genuine and non-judgmental to guide them through their thoughts leads to transformation. A client-centered approach in the therapeutic
relationship
involves self-actualization, empathy, and unconditional positive regard when practicing a person-centered approach. I believe Eclectic therapy isn't a specific type of therapy. The phrase describes the way many counselors work. They may begin therapy in one style and shift to

I work with children (6-17), young adults (18-24),
couples
and families.
I believe that people do the best with what they have. Trauma, stress, anxiety and adverse life experiences can, at times, derail us from being our “best”. My role as a therapist is to help you reach your pinnacle. I always work from a strengths-based and client-centered focus. The client is the expert of their own life, but I serve as an agent for change to assist in developing, applying and supporting the therapeutic growth. I have experience with children, teenagers, young adults (up to age 35),
couples
and families.

Many will enter therapy thinking, “What have I been doing wrong to get here?” I meet clients and think, “What have you been doing right to make it this far?” Yes, I think a bit backwards, but it’s what allows me to find innovative ways to help clients move forward using their strengths. Individuals,
couples
, and families who have previously felt stuck in complex issues with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss, adoption, parenting, and relationships report finding relief through embracing their strengths and being reassured that their experience is valid. This helps tap into their innate ability to heal and renew balance.

Everyone is different and that's okay. We all struggle and that's okay. We all deal with difficult and hard times and sometimes we just need a little support. During our journey together we will travel those difficult areas in life while discovering those personal strengths you already possess. My hope is that through a strong
relationship
built on trust, understanding, and even a little humor we will find a level of healthy freedom. As we work together you may discover that your journey would best be traveled with someone else, so it is important you find someone who is a good fit for you.

Nothing in life has to be in vain- whether through opportunities for healing and growth, insights, and strengths development, the trials and tribulations that come against us can be transformed from weighing us down into stepping stones for moving forward through healing. Counseling offers a unique type of human interaction- unlike speaking with friends and family, the session is solely focused on you and helping you reach your goals in life. I offer a collaborative approach in treating you as the expert on yourself and your world while I use my expertise and training to assist you in reaching your goals.

My number one priority is for my clients to feel comfortable. I take a laid-back approach that is fairly directive yet very empathic. Psychoeducation and self-esteem work are major parts of my practice as I utilize these tools to empower my clients. I also focus on coping skills and the
relationship
between thoughts, feelings and behaviors (CBT-focused). I like to be transparent with clients and increase their comfortability by letting my own personality shine through.

I offer therapy to adult individuals and
couples
in a calm, relaxing, and accepting environment.
Are you the type of person who longs for connection and safety in your relationships, but ends up pushing those who care for you away? Often these behaviors are responses to childhood trauma. While these responses may have helped you survive your trauma in childhood, they are only causing you distress as an adult. If you have found your current way of coping with daily life or handling relationships is not working for you, I can help guide you in setting and achieving your goals of healthier communication, coping skills, and trust in your
relationship
.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
