I take an attachment-based and trauma informed approach to therapy.
Being a human in the world is both an inherently beautiful and painful process. Grief, loss and trauma shape the ways that we approach our daily lives, and sometimes the pain that accompanies these experiences becomes more than anyone can manage on their own. We develop coping strategies in an effort to safely navigate the world, and occasionally these coping strategies become problematic or no longer work for us. Change can be hard and it can be scary, but it can also be exciting and fulfilling; my hope is to help create space to access the range of experiences that arise through the therapeutic process.

My most crucial long-term relationship has been with the great outdoors; my first therapist was Mother Nature. I have used my time in this mighty space to align the things that make my heartbeat: people, nature, and the power of self-development. The outdoors is a powerful resource in helping us feel grounded and at peace, immersed in all Mother Nature offers. My approach is holistic, mindful-based, somatic, and person-centered. My goal for people is to feel good in their skin and reach their true potential of SELF. I offer indoor, virtual, and outdoor therapy.

You want to feel like you've got it together but too often you're caught up in waves of self-criticism, anxiety, loneliness, and frustration. You swing between feeling too much and feeling numb. You're good at analyzing what's wrong but you feel stuck. It's hard to feel joy and satisfaction and you want more. You want to trust yourself, let go of what others might think, actually let some people in, and discover what you’re capable of. You want to invest your energy in things and people that help you feel whole and alive.

Being human isn't always easy. If you're reading this, then you know what I mean. Life can be really challenging and sometimes feel out of control. And we're expected to keep it all together and keeping pushing through. I know how hard it can be to deal with stress and overwhelm alone and I also know it is completely normal to need support at times. When your life starts to feel out of your control, you may need an experienced therapist to help you develop a path forward.

So many women in nursing and healthcare professions get to a point in their career where they realize how exhausted and unsatisfied they are, and wonder if they're in the right place. Maybe your strategies for managing stress stopped working, you've missed a shift because of feeling overwhelmed, made a mistake because your brain is frazzled. Or you spend so much effort recovering from your last shift and preparing for the next one, that you aren't enjoying life and relationships. It's possible to feel inspired and fulfilled in the work you do, while also having a satisfying life outside of work.

It is difficult to take that first step and ask for help, to find a connection in a trusted therapist. I offer a genuine and collaborative counseling environment for individuals, couples and families. If life's issues from everyday challenges to life changing events have become overwhelming, I want you to know that you are not alone. Or, if your relationship has lost that emotional connection, there may be a path toward re-discovery and new discovery. Our work can help you to understand the sources of your distress in ways that will allow you to think more clearly, feel more deeply, and manage your relationship more effectively.

Sometimes talking to a friend isn't enough. That's where I come in. My goal is to provide a safe space to explore what's troubling you. Therapy is more than an objective view of emotional and relational issues though, it's a very important relationship. The warm, supportive and judgment-free relationship we develop actually creates the safe place to explore the difficult issues in life. When boundaries have been violated, often in childhood, it can be difficult to negotiate and expect good boundaries as we grow up. Again, that's where I come in. In the safety of a nurturing place, we will work together to develop and maintain healthy boundaries in your personal, school and professional life. Life can then look a little more manageable and goals more attainable.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
