Art Therapy in Golden, CO
I am a licensed professional counselor and art therapist with over 19 years of experience including grief counseling, adult and pediatric end of life counseling, family therapy, and trauma based counseling.
The decision to seek therapy in times of turmoil is courageous and wise. Often we spend so much time caring for others and giving of ourselves, that we forget to attend to our own needs - emotionally, physically, and spiritually. At times a heartbreaking loss, illness, divorce, or other event is the catalyst for turning our attention inward. Other times the cause may be a need to gain better interpersonal skills, learn ways to reduce anxiety or trauma symptoms, or simply a desire to know ourselves better. Whatever reason has brought you to this place, I am here to help you.

I love to integrate playfulness, art, sand, movement, and nature into our sessions.
My passion lies in working with children, young people whose brains are still developing (typically under 25), and parents seeking guidance and support. I believe our core beliefs and emotional patterns are primarily shaped by early attachment, experiences and our environment. Without the right support, these moments can often lead to anxiety, depression or relationship challenges later in life. Whether you're a young person facing difficulties or a parent feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. It's completely normal to struggle with emotional regulation and expanding your window of tolerance, both on your own or with your child.

My approach integrates talk therapy with expressive and experiential therapies, such as Art Therapy, Play Therapy, and Sandplay, to help process emotions beyond words.
I work with adolescents and adults who are navigating the lasting effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, and overwhelming life experiences. Many of my clients feel on edge, emotionally reactive, shut down, or disconnected—from themselves and from others. Some appear high-functioning on the outside, yet feel exhausted, anxious, or uncertain within. You may find yourself struggling with self-doubt, relationship stress, or a persistent sense of not feeling safe in your own body. Together, we’ll work to understand how your past experiences have shaped you, while building the skills needed to feel more grounded, regulated, and secure.

My ideal clients to work with are people of any age or gender who have relational conflict. I want to respect and honor their authentic identity, looking at their relationships, what is working vs not working, while giving space to explore and heal through past and present trauma. This would include children and parents, families, and couples experiencing such conflict. Supporting clients from a place of curiosity, nonjudgement, and compassion as well as developing trust and hope is my strength as a therapist.

As a clinician, entrepreneur, supervisor, & doctor-in-training, I have spent 10 years honing my craft: the art and science of relationship restoration.
The common saying "It’s about the journey, not the destination" certainly has its time and place. However, if there’s anything I’ve learned over more than a decade working with the havoc wreaked by trauma and relationships in crisis, it’s that the therapeutic journey ought to lead to a destination...quick! When we spend years of our lives wrestling with the challenges of relationship distress, post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety and a whole lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms, in my humble opinion, this journey need not take until we’re old and gray or our most precious relationships have fallen apart.

Art has the amazing power to release the areas of the mind that have been locked up due to previous traumas and experiences.
While the majority of clients that I work with are children and adolescents, I also work with adults experiencing a variety of symptoms, from anxiety to trauma. I believe that art therapy has the power to help every population, no matter what they are suffering from. It does not focus on the product of the art, but more on the process behind creating it.

I also love to incorporate meditation, art therapy and humor if that’s your style.
I support teenagers and adults navigating grief, loss, or major life transitions. I help clients wanting to stop feeling controlled by symptoms of mood swings, bipolar, anxiety, and depression. I often support clients processing the loss of a loved one or other deep life changes. Generally, I love working with seekers, people who are exploring existential questions and are ready for change. Wherever you are in your journey, I’m here to help you gain trust in yourself and get in touch with your own inherent wisdom

I work with adults who want to feel more connected, confident, and fulfilled in their relationships — with others and with themselves. Many of my clients come to me feeling exhausted from trying to meet everyone’s needs and unsure how to find balance — feeling disconnected. Together, we explore who they are now, identify the attachment patterns shaping their relationships, and calm the nervous system that’s been stuck in “overdrive.” This process helps them feel grounded, present, and able to show up authentically in all areas of life.

Hi, I'm Sarah Prater, a therapist who works with children, tweens/teens, adults, individuals, couples, and families. With children, I use child-centered play therapy to help them express themselves in ways that feel natural and safe. For older clients, I draw from a blend of narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support healing, growth, and meaningful change.
I believe therapy should be a collaborative, empowering experience, and I strive to create a warm and engaging environment where every client feels seen and supported.

Are you experiencing stress, anxiety or depression as the result of a major life change? Life changes can be exciting: new job, recent marriage, birth of a child. Life changes can also be terrifying: loss of job, divorce, death of a loved one. You may initiate some life changes: planned retirement, move to another city or another country. Other life changes seem to force themselves upon you: a toxic relationship with a loved one that is no longer acceptable, unexpected injury, loved one that has betrayed your trust.

The world can be a harsh place for someone who doesn’t fit the mold of the majority or adhere to the dominant cultural narrative because it doesn’t fit who they are inside. This struggle can leave you feeling depressed, anxious, and hopeless. I create a supportive therapeutic space to help you unpack your emotions, process struggles, and voice the impacts you have felt from living in a society that can be un-accepting, oppressive, and even abusive. I can help you develop safety from within, healthy coping tools, and brainstorm ways of connecting with community so you can live a fully authentic life.
