Globally, we have been and are going through a massive growth period. We can all feel it. We can feel quite hopeless, lost and stuck at times… our next steps seem difficult to find. It seems like there is a calling in there for each of us, a way that we're being called to grow and deepen, an opportunity. It might be to have a kinder relationship with ourselves and others; or to open up to trust, surrender and letting go; or to go a different direction than we've previously been heading. We are all being called in some way. It's our job to listen. It takes courage to listen and make changes. You are not alone.

Events in life, whether it is experiencing mental health challenges, relationship complexities or a life transition rarely occur without stress. Adjusting to change takes time and patience and while this can be painful, change can influence personal growth and can leave one stronger, more confident and better prepared for what comes next in life. Sometimes it takes a neutral and objective person to facilitate and guide one through challenging seasons of life. Amanda Wurst, LCSW is the owner and operator of Solace Counseling, comprised of 7 therapists, each bringing different areas of speciality.

You are not the only one! Life can feel harder than you thought it would be, in marriage or in your own body and self. Whether you newly notice something isn't working or you're battle weary from trying to change, it's never too late to try something new! Effective therapy searches out the actual root of your problems, the "what's underneath." Your past experiences matter. With this insight we look for those coping mechanisms that have kept you captive in unhealthy patterns, and begin the process of growth. It's amazing how much healing can come from deeply understanding yourself better and truly coming to like what you find.

Please know that if you are struggling with mood, work, family, relationship, and/or parenting issues, you do NOT have to struggle alone. I have found that people often suffer "in silence" and that this can greatly reduce your ability to see viable options to problems. Likewise, sometimes people continue their life feeling chronically distressed and think this is "normal." Know that you are not alone and that counseling can help you create a better life by helping you create options and opportunities for solving life problems.

If coming to me for parent coaching I would add parent tools and compassion.
I am lucky to be doing what I do. I get to shed light and help people get unstuck so to reveal their authentic selves. I have an eclectic approach which includes client-centered, experiential and existential therapy. I allow the person to go at their pace so to address things when ready and with encouragement when needed. I help gain perspective, have accountability, learn about feelings and coping skills, increase self confidence and self esteem and process trauma.

Parents I work with have experiences that might include premature births and NICCU stays, medical challenges for parent/baby, birth trauma/fear, loss over not experiencing the birth that was planned, stillbirth, perinatal/postpartum depression, discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender expression, or grief from losing the little one you carried.
My passion is supporting parents who have experienced difficult births. Bringing another life into this world is an important and challenging experience. Whether you are the individual who gave birth or a witness, there can be immediate and/or lasting waves of physical and emotional difficulties that may effect your life. These paths are unique to each of us because every birth is important and impactful. My work is to listen and journey with you as you explore your birth story and the impacts it has had on your life. Although this is an area of focus, I work with adolescents and adults needing support in other areas of life.

I am primarily a family counselor- couples, children and parenting issues.
These are difficult times. It's hard to find a place where you are seen and important! You matter. Your thoughts and perspectives are valuable. In thinking about your needs and your way of viewing the world, we will work together to define and clarify a path for your future. This new path will be a constant part of how we approach therapy together. By focusing on your needs and values we can find ways to heal your heart and mind with a sense of hope and health. I look forward to hearing from you and learning about your concerns as well as assisting you to make life fulfilling and meaningful.

My focus as an integrative art therapist and counselor is on holistic well-being. I believe all of us have the potential to be whole and healthy. Even though our thoughts and feelings about life’s experiences and challenges may have impacted our mental health and well-being, they are still inside of us, waiting to be rediscovered. Maybe your child can’t sleep at night, because they are worried about divorce, making or losing friends, or being good at their favorite hobby. Maybe they have intense feelings of anxiety or dread that they are not truly loved for who they are, or they worry they are a bad person inside. Perhaps you are worried that despite all your efforts, your children are struggling and you can’t figure out how to reach them. Meanwhile, you all desire deeper connection, love and belonging in your relationships and your family.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
