“Love is at the root of everything; all learning, all relationships. Love or the lack of it.” -Mr. Rogers. Who we are and how we function in the relationships we form so often depends on our basic need in feeling safe and secure. So much of our existence has thrived because of the nurturance, love, and connection with others. When a safe and supportive connection is created, you are stronger as a person and family member. In my work with children, teens, and families, I seek to understand not only the sources of struggle; I also invite exploration of resources and resiliency often found in such stressors.

We all have spirit. The spirit to move toward meaning in this limited time we have. We often need support in this chaotic world, to speak our truth- And a space to set expectations aside but for an hour at a time. To decide what we want to be and how we want to show up in this moment. And what we want to leave behind as a legacy to family , community, and the world. It would be a privilege to provide a space for you to explore this.

1) attachment strengthens while the family discover new meanings of the past.
Empowering parent's and caregiver's ability to connect with their child in a deep and meaningful way is the central focus of Spencer’s approach to overcoming challenges. This begins when parents/caregivers are able to resolve any challenges in the relationship that may be a barrier to therapy. Once this occurs, caregivers and their child can begin, in a safe and therapeutic environment, to explore the trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment and loss which are the emotional source to behavioral struggles.

Throughout our lives, family relationships can bring us great joy and sometimes great stress. These relationships are always complicated. I can help individuals and families navigate the "ups and downs" of everyday life or difficult transitions. Because of years of experience working with pre-teens and adolescents in the schools, I have a special understanding of the unique needs of kids. Everyone in the family deserves to be heard and families who learn to really listen to each other and work on a plan for change, will build lasting, happy memories. I can help you get there.

It takes immense bravery and courage to approach the big questions in life. I love my work because I am humbled by the resilience, grace and humor I get to witness as people navigate these big questions. Often, the clients I work with have some difficulty seeing these qualities in themselves due to trauma, family patterns, sociocultural stressors. I want to walk with you to explore the questions leading you to seek therapy and explore the strengths that come with asking those questions while helping you develop strategies to take care of yourself.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
