Theraplay supports parents and
children
in developing positive connection and healthy interactions.
Do you ever get the sense that your symptoms run deeper than surface level? Many people seek out therapy to resolve issues such as stress, difficulties in relationships, and anxiety and depression only to find out that these issues have a deeper root. There is a pathway to healing! In addition to helping clients manage the ups and downs of life, I specialize in trauma and attachment across the lifespan. I use modalities such as play therapy, EMDR, DBT, CBT, mindfulness, and trauma informed yoga to help
children
, adolescents, and adults heal from the past and develop healthier patterns in the present day.

Welcome! I am a LPCC that specializes in work with
children
, adolescents and adults who are experiencing a wide array of concerns related to relationships, emotional regulation or life transitions. For many, seeking out counseling can be a scary and intimidating first step towards change. As a counselor, my first goal is to create a trusting, therapeutic relationship in the counseling room, and to use this relationship as an agent for change. In session, I'll help uncover patterns in your life that no longer serve you and help you find new ways of being in the world.

I also enjoy working with adolescents and
children
, as well as adults.
I view counseling as a dynamic process between a client and therapist. My theoretical orientation is dependent upon what would be most appropriate for the client. I view each client as unique and I use techniques that are designed to meet that client's specific needs. I listen carefully to my clients so that I can empower, confront when appropriate, teach, encourage, and guide them so they can grow emotionally, spiritually, psychologically and socially. I respect the clients I work with. I want people to participate in a healing process without fear that they will be judged or coerced.

Life’s journey can be tumultuous at times depending on the road you are on at any particular moment.Perhaps your road was difficult to begin with.No matter the journey the need for support at times is invaluable. When I work with my clients I will take the time to understand their history, their family, and in general their world that has made them unique. Our past and the way in which we have lived it can define who we are today.I treat the whole person or the whole family through the integration of evidence based therapies and customize each treatment to fit the needs of my clients.

The majority of my background and training has been working with
children
, adolescents and adults who have experienced significant trauma in their lives.
My name is Erin Thomas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Northern Colorado. In therapy, every client is different and has differing needs for the healing process to occur. This is why the most important step to me in working with a client is establishing a trusting relationship at the beginning of therapy so that I can understand how to help in the most effective way. Connecting with others in a way that supports them through difficult times in their lives has been my passion and I continue to look for new ways to help those who struggle.

I have a tremendous passion for supporting and encouraging the lives of my clients and
children
especially; through the various modulations of life.
“Love is at the root of everything; all learning, all relationships. Love or the lack of it.” -Mr. Rogers. Who we are and how we function in the relationships we form so often depends on our basic need in feeling safe and secure. So much of our existence has thrived because of the nurturance, love, and connection with others. When a safe and supportive connection is created, you are stronger as a person and family member. In my work with
children
, teens, and families, I seek to understand not only the sources of struggle; I also invite exploration of resources and resiliency often found in such stressors.

I have extensive experience working with the needs of identified Gifted
children
and teens.
Gifted students tend to set high expectations and standards for themselves; are perfectionistic and become profoundly disappointed, stressed, and hopeless if they feel they have failed to measure up to their expectations. Gifted individuals are intense and sensitive. Some may view these "big emotions" as illogical, scary, and risky. They need support in balancing their interpersonal and emotional self with their intellectual and logical self. Through setting goals that are realistic and healthy, educating gifted about their overexcitabilities, introducing healthy coping strategies, and self-soothing tools prove very impactful.

children
develop an identity as competent and confident young people. When working with and supporting parents, we will develop plans together to help build the skills necessary to modify behavioral outcomes in home and school settings. Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
