Particularly with the unique challenges connected with the
adoption
, foster-care and trauma.
Empowering parent's and caregiver's ability to connect with their child in a deep and meaningful way is the central focus of Spencer’s approach to overcoming challenges. This begins when parents/caregivers are able to resolve any challenges in the relationship that may be a barrier to therapy. Once this occurs, caregivers and their child can begin, in a safe and therapeutic environment, to explore the trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment and loss which are the emotional source to behavioral struggles.

Talking through feelings, experiences and emotions can be more helpful and healing than many people realize. I am passionate about helping women and couples who are struggling with infertility, IVF and alternate methods of family building (including
adoption
, foster care, surrogacy), as well as, postpartum anxiety/depression. I am an IVF mom who left a career in sales and marketing to pursue a counseling degree after my own long battle with infertility and PPD. I also love to help moms who are trying to balance taking care of themselves with the responsibility of raising tiny humans. I, also, work with anxiety and depression.

Many will enter therapy thinking, “What have I been doing wrong to get here?” I meet clients and think, “What have you been doing right to make it this far?” Yes, I think a bit backwards, but it’s what allows me to find innovative ways to help clients move forward using their strengths. Individuals, couples, and families who have previously felt stuck in complex issues with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief & loss,
adoption
, parenting, and relationships report finding relief through embracing their strengths and being reassured that their experience is valid. This helps tap into their innate ability to heal and renew balance.

I regularly work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse disorders, grief/loss,
adoption
/attachment issues and learning disabilities who want to develop more awareness and healthy coping skills.
Emotional wounding, loss, trauma, and unhealthy relationships often create a sense of overwhelm, heaviness and prolonged anxiety that can feel never-ending. Over time, it's common to become increasingly detached, stagnant and feel like it's impossible to connect with others in an authentic and meaningful way. Psychotherapy provides the unique opportunity to 'get real' with 'what is', allowing you to grow and heal in ways that will benefit all of your relationships, including (most importantly) the relationship that you have with yourself.

Everyone has a story. I want to hear your story, whether you are depressed and suicidal, have parenting challenges, are struggling with relationship boundaries, or finding where you fit in this world. I believe in you as a human being, a relational being, a spiritual being. Professionally, I am a seasoned therapist with almost 30 years of experience, including over a decade of which involved assessing people in crisis, supporting those struggling with medical issues, and connecting people to community resources. Personally, I am an adoptive parent of five children.

Do you feel as though you are parenting several children in one? Do you have an adoptive child that is struggling? Does your child: deny remembering specific events, vary in his/her abilities, rapidly change moods, steal, hoard food, lack social skills, show physical/verbal aggression, react disproportionately to specific situations? Are you confused by your child's behavior and frustrated that your current parenting skills/techniques are not effective? Are your child's teachers reporting inappropriate or disruptive behaviors at school? Would you like to gain hope, learn new skills, and see more of who your child really is?

I have been working with parents and children for 20 years and I specialize in finding the underlying causes of behavior in order to help children develop an identity as competent and confident young people. When working with and supporting parents, we will develop plans together to help build the skills necessary to modify behavioral outcomes in home and school settings. I work from a solutions-focused perspective that can hopefully generate some quick action steps in addition to the underlying work on causes, building self-esteem, and developing identity.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
