Life is good! Or at least it should be! For over 20 years, I have been privileged to lead clients through life challenges such as stress and anxiety, depression, grief/loss, abuse/trauma, self-esteem, guilt and shame, womens issues, co-dependency and relationship issues. My therapeutic approach to counseling is client-centered and strengths-based. I love to meet clients where they are and providing an empathetic and safe environment to process life. During therapy, we will use strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help understand that thoughts, beliefs and behaviors are directly connected to emotions and responses.

I take an eclectic and individualized approach for each client that utilizes concepts from CBT, family systems, and solution focused therapy. I also incorporate concepts from art therapy, play therapy, and somatic experiencing in efforts to improve self-awareness, promote connection, and increase mindfulness. As a parent and professional who has worked in our community with families and educators for over a decade, I understand that each individual, family, and child is faced with unique complexities and stressors that must be addressed on multiple levels with sensitivity and understanding.

Barbara brings experience, warmth, and humor to the therapeutic environment and creates a welcoming space for client concerns and challenges. She employs Internal Family Systems (IFS) methods to help clients learn to understand their "bad actors" (personality parts that engage in impulsive or harmful behaviors), as well as those that manage the client's life and keep them out of trouble. Barbara facilitates clients' re-discovery of their own vast internal resources and with this, they begin to realize their authentic qualities and strengths. . . . . . I utilize a unique combination of traditional therapy and life coaching to address issues like anxiety,
self esteem
, executive functioning and life or career direction.
Are you neurodivergent? Let me guess, you've seen a therapist, if not several, and its been... just ok. They listened, maybe they made some suggestions, but they didn't really get you. I've heard this story dozens of times from neurodiverse clients who are autistic, have ADHD or don't really fit in any specific box. You want to meet with someone who understands how your neurotype changes the way you experience and interact with the world. You need someone who can help differentiate what is part of who you are, and what is something you have been forced to use to cope with a world that wants you to be "normal".

Therapy can be very difficult, but I believe in its importance because it gives us the chance to see ourselves, our relationships, and the world in a different way. Therapy also helps us build the skills necessary to achieve our goals. My approach to therapy is collaborative, goal oriented, and focused on building a strong therapeutic relationship that creates and environment of trust and respect that allows us to grow and solve problems together. Challenges always look the most difficult when you are facing them alone and I want to be there to help you when you’re facing your biggest challenges.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
