Hello my name is Rich Audsley, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist , and I specialize in working with couples and families. The family is a system, much like the human body. Just as the entire body suffers when one of its parts fails to work in harmony with the rest of the body, the entire family is distressed when one of its members is lost or is "out of sync." Families and couples sometimes need help understanding how their particular system is working or not working.

I started working in the mental health field 25 years ago. While working at a therapeutic boarding school, I developed a passion for helping children and adolescents which led me to start a private practice over 20 years ago. I believe in the importance of a therapeutic relationship that is built on trust and safety as my clients develop more insight about themselves and their relationships by applying evidence-based treatment modalities. I approach therapy from a trauma-informed and strength-based lens utilizing CBT, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, and Play Therapy.

I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, trained in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Somatic interventions, and practice from a systemic and holistic framework grounded in attachment and person-centered therapy, as well as transpersonal psychology.
I believe that beneath every symptom that creates our suffering is a wise, healthy, and whole Self yearning to break free of old shackles and guide us home to the person we are meant to be. In this way, I help clients to reconceptualize their issues as road signs that are guiding them on their path of healing. Just the same way that physical symptoms like a fever or ache directs us to an ailment that needs addressing, so too do psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, or addictions, point to a deeper underlying wound that is calling to be healed.

I believe that every individual, couple and family has its own unique strengths that are sometimes hard to remember when feeling overwhelmed and alone. I understand what a big step it can be to decide on a therapist, therefore, I offer an initial 30 minute session at no charge as an opportunity for us to decide if we are a good fit or to provide you with additional resources to access. I enjoy working with families, couples and adolescents and use a strengths-based approach in my practice. I'm really looking forward to working within the Conifer community

I've always wanted to help children and families thrive. This passion is what drove me to become a therapist and it's what guides my commitment to delivering a positive therapy experience to each family I see. More than anything, I believe that families have unique strengths that will guide them through life's challenging times. I believe in the process of therapy - play therapy and EMDR in particular - as tools to cultivate resiliency, attachment, and problem-solving skills for children and their families.

Whether you are a child or an adult, each of these questions has meaning. As living, breathing and feeling human beings we go through this "Life" journey encountering and experiencing many glimpses of happiness, as well as, tastes of struggle. Therapy is an incredibly useful tool that helps with a range of issues, from anxiety to sleep to trauma to relationships. With a therapist’s support, you can understand why difficult things happen to you. If you have talked to friends and family about how you’re feeling, you realize that they tell you to do XYZ and that will surely fix it! But life is a struggle. Therapy allows you an hour a week to focus on yourself. It can help you thrive in your career, make a good marriage great, help you be a fantastic parent, and make your purpose in life a little clearer. Therapy can teach you coping skills: efforts to minimize stress.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
