You do not need to be an artist or have art experience.
You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by experiences that never had space to be heard. Maybe life transitions, grief, trauma, or ongoing stress have left you disconnected from yourself. You want relief, clarity, and a sense of being whole again. You are looking for a safe place where you can slow down, feel understood, and explore what is going on inside so you can move forward with more ease and self-trust.

You might be doing okay on the surface, but inside, you’re overthinking, second-guessing yourself, and feeling disconnected in relationships. Many of my clients grew up navigating difficult experiences, maybe even with strong expectations from family, culture, or religion. If you feel that way, you are not alone. As an adult, you might feel stuck between who you are and who you are supposed to be. Therapy doesn’t have to start when you are in a crisis. It can be a space to understand yourself more clearly, feel more grounded, and build relationships that actually feel natural and sustainable.

Both myself and most of my clients identify with the intersections of neurodivergence, disability, trauma, moral injury, and the LGBTQ+ community. Healing is a political act and I do not separate how systemic oppression and polycrises impact our capacities to show up for the collective we belong to. Our work towards liberation will find direction through your special joys, curiosities, and hopes and isn't afraid of BIG emotions or the decay that comes before new growth.

Hello, I'm Mark. As we start our journey at the bottom of the mountain, we must understand there are several paths to the top. All of these paths have the potential to lead you to the summit, where you can find the view you've been looking for. You're going to choose your path, just as with many things in life. I will walk alongside you as we ascend the mountain, meeting daily goals along the way. As we move forward, we'll process the roots, rocks, caves, and canyons we traverse. Why do you keep tripping over them, and why are they holding you back?

Life is difficult under the best of circumstances. Perhaps you’re managing a life transition (or two or three), searching for identity and purpose, or looking for ways forward after stepping into sobriety. Maybe you’re struggling in relationships. Or maybe you’re just generally trying to figure yourself out. You may be seeking therapy in order to realize vital goals in your relationships or career. These struggles may be the result of using ways of coping that once were vital in dealing with important people and problems from earlier in life, but which now get in the way of a healthy emotional life & positive relationships.

How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
