Much of her success is with helping adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse or other forms of trauma, couples overcoming infidelity and families/individuals coping with addiction by learning how to lead a happy life. I believe that we each have what it takes to move forward and succeed in life. Sometimes things happen to us beyond our control. Other times, we simply get in our own way. I've experienced both of these situations in my life, and I believe I can help you respond to life in a way that moves you forward in the direction you want to go. The type of therapy I practice, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) provides the framework for how to live your best life. ACT's principles provide a new approach to life, a way of being in the world. I learned them as a client years ago, and I still practice them everyday in my own life.

Most of my clients were either not sure about therapy, or they had already had a bad experience with therapy in the past. I pride myself on giving a different kind of experience. I’m real, I show up fully, (I tend to swear a lot unless you tell me not to) I will never talk down to you or presume what is best for you. You’re in charge. My job is to listen, give feedback, and help you towards the goals that you set. Making that first call can be nerve-wracking, but that's generally the hardest part. (you can text me, if that's easier 970-903-3893) You can learn more about me at www.durangopsychotherapy.com

My ideal client is frustrated, angry, in despair. Life hasn’t worked out the way it was supposed to. (S)he lost herself somewhere long ago, left herself behind. Relationships are hard; those recurring patterns and reactive behavior keep interfering with connection, and self-esteem, and contentment, and vitality, and... A malaise has settled, along with a darkness. This inevitably leads to anxiety, depression, isolation, addiction, and despair. My clients know there must be more. But, where to begin? How to start?

I have always been pulled towards topics that many in society do not want to talk about – sex, death, money, religion, addiction, and many others. I have seen what happens to individuals when they are left to struggle with these topics alone. Some feel guilt, fear, anxiety, depression, or just an overall sense that they are not allowed to be who they really are. My goal in therapy is to provide a safe space for individuals or those in relationship to talk about these topics and feelings. I work with them to develop the tools to grow into being confident, unashamed, and authentically themselves.

Relationship is key in this process you are exploring -- it is in our therapeutic relationship where Alchemy happens. Therapy is not only about your story - it is about you, the Storyteller (what does that mean? call me, I will be happy to illuminate). It is my heartfelt belief that Safety in the therapeutic relationship allows for increased self-awareness, for Transformation, and ultimately, for our Truest self to emerge, to Blossom – allowing you to more easefully and naturally live free (from.... fill in the blank) and empowered. I truly believe it takes Courage for us all to genuinely live from our most authentic place.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
