I have most experience treating
depression
, anxiety, grief/existential concerns, and relational issues.
The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are: This quote was written by Carl Jung, a psychoanalyst well-known for his work in dream analysis. This exemplifies the philosophy I bring to counseling and my life overall. I take an empowered approach to counseling which believes we all hold the necessary answers within ourselves, sometimes we just need a qualified guide to help in our self-exploration. Suffering is a natural part of the human experience, and I seek to work with others to have greater agency and understanding over this suffering.

Many clients are confused and unsure where to begin on their path for change. Unresolved trauma, grief, guilt, abuse, negative memories, abandonment, betrayal by friends or family can create low self-esteem, unregulated emotions, relational issues, self-isolation, fear of trusting others or being hurt, loneliness, self-harm, feeling burdened by self, suicide ideation, addictive behavior to mask pain,
depression
, anxiety, co-dependency. I have often helped clients gain self-compassion, love, respect, clarity and confidence with the understanding it takes time and patience. I offer a warm, accepting approach in a pleasing safe space.

depression
, trauma and relationship problems.
I believe in forming a strong and trusting relationship with my clients. I am known for my warmth, patience, curiosity, creativity and energy. I work successfully with individuals who feel stuck; that something is blocking them from getting to where they want to be. They may have lost their motivation, self-confidence, feel sad or fearful, have difficulties in relationships, or are haunted by things that have happened to them. I am attentive to how each individual takes in information and engage that learning style in sessions. My ultimate goal is to help others be more aware of who they are.

Each one of us is capable of living a life of authenticity, connection, meaning, and joy. Yet so much can get in the way. Early on, we're taught to believe that something is wrong with us - we're the wrong size, the wrong gender/sexuality/race, have the wrong talents/goals. We're taught to strive for a limited vision of success. On top of these cultural pressures, many of us experience trauma such as emotional/physical abuse. Is it any wonder that so many people suffer from unhappiness,
depression
, anxiety, self-criticism, and disempowerment?

It's easy to feel overwhelmed these days. Crazy-busy lifestyles, excessive work demands, financial worries, work/life imbalances, relationship conflict, worry about the future..to name a few of the issues that can exhaust our reserves and lead to emotional distress. I have over 30 years of clinical practice as a psychologist, helping adults, couples, and adolescents who have been affected by
depression
, anxiety, anger, trauma, grief, relationship conflict, and mood disorders. Clients not only recover from their current distress, but also to learn how to become more resilient and "bullet-proof" against future stressors.

, and many others.

A sense of well-being, our most basic state, can be restored. Habitual behaviors, reactions, and styles of thinking contribute to our suffering and create stress,
depression
, anxiety and inhibit the full enjoyment of life, especially if emotional needs have gone unmet or traumas have gotten in the way. Through sensitive application of specific tehniques, clarity and and ease can return. I offer a subsidy with a low copay for clients who qualify as well as a sliding fee to make therapy affordable.

Therapy is becoming more normalized in a way that it wasn’t for your parents or grandparents. This is an opportunity to explore your own wants/needs, boundaries and personal values that drive your life daily. I focus on three main modalities of mindfulness, somatic experiencing and EMDR. I start every session with a 5-10min mindfulness meditation. Secondly, somatic experiencing is feeling your emotions through physical sensations. Lastly I am trained in EMDR which can be helpful for a range of symptoms from anxiety,
depression
to PTSD. I also offer psychedelic/ entheogens intention setting and/or integration therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
