Life presents us with many situations and many requirements that are very stressful. Trying to cope and manage these events can cause both anxiety and depression if the challenge seems overwhelming or unattainable . Many of these stressors may be very specific situations such as performance as an athlete or musician or public speaker. Some are more unpredictable such as coping with a loss or life transition. So often we expect ourselves to "push through" or "deal with it" and we don't accept and honor the difficulty of these stressors. Many times, despite our best efforts it is difficult to deal with these situations on our own.

I am a Board-certified psychiatrist, and I really enjoy the "therapy" portion of my profession, and continue to believe that the combined use of psychotherapy and medication (if indicated) by one caregiver is the most successful way to help people feel better and do more of what they want. My approach is eclectic but primarily involves supportive psychotherapy. Currently, I am working virtually via Facetime, Zoom or phone, but I am thinking of including in-person meetings, if you or others tell me that it is preferred. I really believe it works better.

Professionals and Millennials often carry years worth of childhood hurts, trauma, family problems, or grief. If your family growing up didn't see your needs or feelings, your adult life now probably includes anxiety, pressures, people pleasing, anger, and not feeling "good enough." You might be overwhelmed with work stress yet continue to over-perform and burnout. You may not feel in charge of your emotions at times. A parent (still!) makes family harmony difficult. Or perhaps you have experienced the death of a family member. I've worked alongside people in their 20s, 30s, 40s at universities and nonprofits on three continents.
