As a mom, clinical nerd, and advocate I have developed an intentional small practice to provide a supportive, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can feel heard and understood. I believe that therapy is for everyone and my job is to help you figure out where you need additional support. Lean on me to be a mental health expert and do some of the work. Let's learn, practice, explore, and figure out how to get you feeling your best. Let's work together to make sustainable changes so you can live the life you want. Change is possible.

Or maybe you're losing sleep over a really difficult relationship with a partner, parent, child, or even a friend, and you just need to sort through it with someone who isn't any of those people.
I offer psychotherapy and biofeedback, separately or together. I use techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to help you become aware of and regulate your thoughts and feelings. Biofeedback training can help you see and manage your physical signals, such as breathing and heart rate. When combined, they are a powerful tool for healing.

Or, no matter what you try or medication you take, you just can't sleep, which creates a cascade of problems from inattention to reactivity, to an inability to be present with those we love.
Hello, I’m Laura Mahony, and I am dedicated to helping individuals like you discover your responsive self instead of a reactive self through neurofeedback and counseling. Neurofeedback is a modality where you can change the well worn neuropathways that holds you back, to new neuropathways that allow a mentally flexible and self-aware state.

The anxieties and worries that constantly invade our mind can be incredibly difficult to live with. We often respond to this by either trying to be superficially positive and “pushing through” or we become regularly overwhelmed by waves of anxiety, panic and chronic stress. If you’ve gotten to a point where the frustration and anguish of anxiety, disruption of sleep and ineffective ways of dealing with those things have reached a crisis point, let’s work together on coming up with new, more effective responses that can tangibly change and improve your life in an ongoing and ultimately fulfilling way.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
