I use Interpersonal/Relational, Self-Compassion, Psychodynamic , Internal Family Systems (Parts work), Somatic Experiencing, and Trauma Narrative therapies.
Thanks for visiting my page. I have discovered a common obstacle among clients is how they are highly self-critical with themselves and subsequently experience distress in their world. This process manifests into or intensifies symptoms (i.e. depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-worth, and/or relationship issues, etc). Using a relational approach, I work to help clients build self-awareness, add language to their past experiences that impact their present, and build skills to cope. My intention is to help you experience long-term well-being where we not only treat the symptoms, but also explore the root of your concerns.

I draw from psychodynamic , somatic, gestalt, transpersonal, and relational modalities and tailor my approach based on your needs and desires.
Therapy is about developing a new kind of relationship with one's experience. Much of our pain, suffering, and struggle stem from resisting the experience, judging it, and denying it. My work is dedicated to helping you embrace the challenges and find meaning in them by helping you slow down, enter the experience, and discover your potent spark. We have our answers within and by looking inside, our suffering finds meaning and transformation, our vision finds clarity and awakening.

I use an integrative approach to psychotherapy that incorporates person-centered therapy, trauma-informed care, psychoeducation, feminist therapy, solution-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and EMDR to help adults achieve better mental health.
I love working with adults who are curious about themselves and who are ready to look at their past, including any trauma that has impacted their life. I am trained in EMDR which is a powerful treatment modality that helps process traumatic or distressing events and memories. I use assessments that have been validated and researched to ensure that I understand what you are going through. As we work together, I will ask about what is working best for you and will tailor my approach as needed. Please note: this Psychology Today Profile is maintained by my employer, SKB Therapy. In alignment with Psychodynamic Theory, I believe the therapeutic relationship itself can serve as a healing force.
While some approach therapy with a “corrective lens”, I endorse a holistic and relational approach that disentangles unwanted thoughts, behaviors and feelings and supports your authoring of new and empowering self-narratives. Through compassion, attunement, and mutuality, I hope to create an affirming realm to tend to harmful experiences and promote movement towards your goals & wellbeing. I am passionate about working with adults, adolescents, and couples to address anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship problems, grief, life adjustments, body image, and other concerns. I affirm all gender, sexual, and cultural identities.

The question I see on the face of almost every new client I meet is: Where do I even begin?! You likely have a complicated story to tell and need someone to help you untangle it, but WOW does that feel daunting. The foundation of my practice is relationally psychodynamic , which is a fancy way of saying I want to help you understand the patterns in your life, help bring to the surface unconscious motivations that have led to self-defeating behaviors, and help you understand how your relationships have affected how you experience trust, safety, and connection. I use humor and metaphor, and value building a strong therapeutic alliance.

I am a Board-certified psychiatrist who has been practicing for 26 years. At the time of my residency, psychiatrists were trained in both psychotherapy and the use of medication when appropriate. I continue to believe that the combined use of these treatments by one caregiver is the best approach to helping people achieve their treatment goals. My approach is flexible but the focus of my training primarily involved psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as supportive psychotherapy. Currently, I am working only virtually via Facetime or Zoom or by phone but am hopeful that this will expand if that is preferred.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
