My approach is psychoanalytic in nature.
I will do my best to listen carefully and closely, and speak back in ways that enhance your curiosity. In this collaboration, you will be able to discover more of who you are both to yourself, and to other people. You will find in me someone who respects all parts of you and challenges you. I understand that therapy is not easy, and will do my best to make you feel understood throughout the process.

When it comes to therapy, I try to make the process as applicable as possible for the client in order to make them feel comfortable. A lot of the clients I see are working on difficult transitions in life, such as grief and loss, coping with stress from daily life, or working through their past. The clients I see are all motivated to not let their past, daily stressors, or negative habits define who they are! We will work through these issues in order to gain awareness, generate acceptance, and then take appropriate action in order to get the most out of life. I will go at your pace to allow for both comfort and development.

I have been in private practice since 1976. Most of the people I see want to alter repetitive patterns in life and love they cannot seem to change. Some have been in therapy before. I find change to be a challenge because we tend to see what we already know. The therapeutic process should offer a partnership during which new ways of seeing and experiencing develop because of the different perspectives that the relationship offers. Recently I have found Skype to be useful for those with unusual schedules or locations as well as face to face visits.

Therapy can be a waste of time. You can sit down on someone’s couch, spend fifty minutes venting, and walk away feeling a little lighter but knowing that nothing is really different. I don’t have patience for that type of therapy, and you shouldn’t either. Therapy at its best can facilitate profound change, helping you to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

I love to work with folks who are struggling to make their way in life, who hope that life can be better, but aren't quite sure how. I understand how desperate life can feel, and also how real healing can transform the way you feel in your own skin. There are times when we know something's wrong, and can't figure it out on our own. Maybe you feel "crazy" in relationships, experience debilitating depression, anxiety, or panic, or are relying on unhealthy habits to cope with your day to day life. Maybe all of the above. If this describes you, take heart, because real healing is possible, and I would like to help.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
