I work with children, couples, and families struggling with PTSD/C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, communication issues, maladaptive coping, and interpersonal conflict. If you're a caregiver and you need help understanding your child or are stumped as to how to intervene or discipline in a more effective way, I can help teach parenting skills that strengthen the parent-child relationship. If you're in a partnership and are struggling with communication, intimacy, and connection or curious about exploring other relationship structures, I can help you navigate those dynamics as well.

Using a brain-based lens, I combine counseling with neurofeedback to work at the level where patterns actually live, underneath thoughts, mood, and behavior.
You look like you are holding it together. But you are exhausted. Your brain will not slow down, or it has slowed so much you cannot get going. Foggy. Disconnected. Behind. Maybe there is anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, or sleep that never feels restorative. You are ready for something that goes deeper than managing it. I work at the level of neurophysiology, understanding why your brain adapted the way it did and working with it directly. We start with a brain map. From there we build something specific to you. This is where things tend to shift.

Michael Newman LCSW Life is a mixture of experiences. Many are enriching and pleasurable, while others leave us feeling confused, doubtful, hurt, stressed, or angry. These challenging emotions and the reactions that often accompany them commonly arise in our relationships with partners, children, parents, in our work environment, or in our efforts to create a meaningful path in life. We may realize that we need more than our current resources to creatively navigate life in a way that leads to finding resolution or accommodation to the challenges and fulfillment in our life journey.

You’ve built a successful life, but something's off. The pace, the pressure, the way you move through the world—it’s wearing on you. You’ve contained everything, but holding it all together keeps getting harder. You're composed but unsettled. You’re showing up and getting it done, but it’s not adding up the way it used to. You want to understand why—and you want to do something about it.

You know you can't keep going like this, but you don't know what else to do. Maybe you're going through the motions, quietly wondering if this is all there is. Or you feel invisible, like everyone needs something from you, but no one sees you. Whether you're a parent losing yourself in the demands of raising children, a woman in midlife facing uncertain next chapters, a child or teen overwhelmed by emotions that feel too big, or someone in the thick of it, I offer a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can finally exhale and show up as you are: messy, tired, and uncertain. Together, we can begin to find your way forward.

Neurofeedback Therapists
How does neurofeedback work?
Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback, meaning it provides real-time information about one’s physiological functions—in this case, brain activity. As they receive this feedback, clients are guided by a computer program, typically via visual or auditory cues, which aims to modify the brain patterns associated with their negative symptoms. Over time, proponents argue, clients learn how to better regulate their own brain function and improve the symptoms that cause problems in day-to-day life.

How effective is neurofeedback?
Some research has found that neurofeedback can help treat conditions like ADHD, and anecdotal evidence suggests that many people who undergo neurofeedback find it beneficial. However, some experts have expressed skepticism, arguing that the evidence in favor of neurofeedback is thin or may be due to the placebo effect. While the procedure is generally seen as safe and has few side effects, it is not typically considered a first-line therapy and is instead often recommended as an adjunct treatment.

What are the limitations of neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is generally considered safe and most patients report manageable side effects, or none at all. However, the research on neurofeedback remains inconclusive, and some experts are skeptical that it’s as effective as its proponents claim. It can also be costly and may not be covered by insurance; thus, it’s important to confirm cost and insurance coverage before initiating a neurofeedback program.

How long does neurofeedback last?
A typical neurofeedback session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. There is no set number of sessions needed for a course of neurofeedback. Before initiating a neurofeedback regimen, clients are advised to discuss the treatment timeline with their provider, as well as when they might expect to see results.
