As a member of the
LGBTQIA
+ community, I have a great respect and enjoyment for working with others in my community.
I enjoy working with clients of all ages, but feel like I tend to connect well with female clients presented with depression or anxiety. As an MFT, I also love working with families. My past work experiences include inpatient substance abuse treatment, outpatient geriatric IOP, inpatient adolescent facilities, private practice, and community-based mental health rehabilitation services.

I specialize in working with the
LGBTQ
+ population, particularly
transgender
and gender-expansive individuals, and help people with issues related to identity, life transitions, depression, anxiety, mood instability, chronic relational problems, health issues, existential crises, and the impacts of discrimination.
The question I see on the face of almost every new client I meet is: Where do I even begin?! You likely have a complicated story to tell and need someone to help you untangle it, but WOW does that feel daunting. The foundation of my practice is relationally psychodynamic, which is a fancy way of saying I want to help you understand the patterns in your life, help bring to the surface unconscious motivations that have led to self-defeating behaviors, and help you understand how your relationships have affected how you experience trust, safety, and connection. I use humor and metaphor, and value building a strong therapeutic alliance.

As a therapist and a fellow traveler, I recognize the complexity and challenges of being a human being in this world. I believe that our identities are our most precious asset, despite what society has conditioned us to believe. My work is centered around helping you reconnect with your inherent wholeness and heal the impact of the past. With my support, you will be able to explore and unpack the life experiences, narratives, and limiting beliefs that challenge you showing up exactly as you are in this world. Because of my own identity as non-binary, I am particularly honored to work with folks who identify as
queer
/
LGBTQ
+.

LGBTQ
+, people of color, individuals in the justice system, etc.
My approach to therapy is to meet my client where they are at along their lifelong journey towards contentment, success, and understanding their own intersectionality. Many of us bring different “selves” with us to each interaction in life, whether that be our gender, race/ethnicity, mental health diagnosis, or attachment style. The goal is to help individuals understand how all of these parts of ourselves interact and how we can best approach a life worth living while navigating daily obstacles and life’s transitions. We will work as a team throughout your treatment with you leading as the expert on your life the entire way.

Sometimes being who you are is stressful.
Queer
folks have a lot weighing on them these days. It can be difficult to find the firm ground you need. So here you are, taking the first step. Whether it’s you or your teen, our work together will focus on healing, and finding joy among the chaos. Choosing to change and no longer choosing to stay the same is such an important step. Maybe you are uncertain of where to go next. I hear that. Therapy offers a space for you to talk about how and where you want your life to go.

I identify as a

LGBTQ

I take a holistic and contextual approach to therapy. I want to know your sources of pain - but I also want to know what you value, what has shaped you, where you draw inspiration, your beliefs, and how you feel in your own body. We’ll peel back layers, we'll process distress, and we'll build practical tools to manage the challenges you're facing. Ultimately, we’ll build a more authentic, empowered sense of self. If something is no longer serving you, let’s figure out how to change it. My areas of focus include sexuality, sex, identity, anxiety, depression, relationships, and life-transitions.

My primary areas of expertise are in sex therapy,
LGBTQ
populations, couples, parent coaching, child behavioral challenges, life transitions, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, and depression.
Working on improving relationships, sex, intimacy, sexuality and gender identity to enhance quality of life is needed to find happiness. I strive to create a safe and accepting space to explore and discover an authentic lifestyle within these aspects of life. Through a sex positive approach, the goal is to reduce shame and enhance authenticity. Beginning with the exploration with relationship to self, my clients are able to enhance their relationships with others. Challenging the messages, beliefs, and values family and society has created allows for clients to learn and create their own narrative for the life that aligns with them.

I wholeheartedly believe that
LGBTQIA
+ folks deserve excellent counseling support in spaces where it's safe to bring our full selves to light. Therapy is a place and experience where we can grieve and heal trauma, understand and develop our relationships with loved ones and community, and each create a healthy relationship with ourselves- one where relentless inner critics can transform into wise and compassionate friends. What healing work might you be able to do in a space where you feel safe?

In my practice, I work with members of the
LGBTQ
+ community, folks grappling with religious trauma, those struggling with body image/ disordered eating, and survivors of bullying.
Hi there! I am so glad you're here. While I was growing up, I quickly learned that there were few places I could be truly myself and accepted just as I am. As a therapist, I've discovered many of us share that same story. We learn to conform and perform in response to the pressure of our world telling us who to be, and we are left confused, ashamed, and exhausted when it becomes too much to maintain as adults. In therapy, I offer space for you to be exactly who you are, wherever you're at, so that together, we can discover a life that feels good and enjoyable to live, based on your most authentic identity, desires, and values.

Hi, my name is Jess (he/him/his). I am an
LGBTQIA
+ Specialized Therapist in Denver. I understand how hard it is to find a therapist who truly understands the unique mental health needs of
LGBTQIA
+ folks. Many practices will post a rainbow flag on their website and therapists state they are an ‘Ally’ but have not attained the level of expertise to meet the unique mental health needs of
LGBTQIA
+ clients.
Queer
mental health is my passion. I have dedicated my life to the field and serving our community through my therapy practice, writing/research, and community outreach projects.

In the sea of white women who want to talk about your feelings: Here I am. Wildly curious, outrageously non-judgmental, and can empathize like it's my job (because it is). If it feels like you've got a one way ticket on the struggle bus, I'm here to respectfully disagree. You've got this. And I mean that even if it's crushing depression, anxiety, traumatic experiences, existential crisis, mommy/daddy/other relationship issues, substance abuse, loneliness, or systemic oppression (special shoutout to BIPOC folks and my

How can I find a therapist in Denver?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
