Substances, like alcohol, and behaviors like gambling, can be difficult to cut down or stop.
Having almost 30 years of studying and practicing gives experience to a wide array of training and individuals. There are not many conditions or situations foreign to me. Working in rural areas, before telehealth, required much additional training as there were often not other providers to refer to. This resulted in additional licenses and certifications.

I also work extensively with men who struggle with gambling and pornography addictions, as well as impulse control, smartphone addiction, poor boundaries, and ADHD.
Ready to move past relationship issues, emotional struggles, and unresolved trauma? Struggling with low self-esteem or lack of identity? Perhaps you're feeling stuck, doom-scrolling and just going through the motions? Regardless the issue, you don't want to stay in therapy forever, and my goal is to help you get to the point where you no longer need my help. I work with individuals and couples, helping them tackle challenges with greater compassion and curiosity. Using evidence-backed therapeutic approaches, we'll utilize techniques you can practice outside of sessions, emphasizing attainable goals and long-term integration.

More and more people are having trouble knowing who they are or where they belong in life. What we were taught growing up or what we learn from society doesn't make sense or apply any longer. Because of this, we have difficulties, from depression to questioning our own belief system. It may appear as confusion, anxiety, anger, or anything that disrupts our day-to-day life. When we feel this way, it is a hurt or loss that is almost impossible to describe. My type of counseling presents people with an opportunity to understand why and how they think and feel the way they do and to go deeper than they could have possibly imagined!

I view counseling as walking down the hallway of life and trying to close the doors to one's past. As one walks down the hallway, one must walk into each room and decide what to hold on to and what to let go of. I understands that seeking therapy can be really difficult and enjoys using humor when appropriate. I am compassionate therapist at times but can be blunt. I do not want to waste your time or money therefore I will work hard with you to come up with a treatment plan that works best. My background includes working on a National Burn unit, ICU, ER, Psychiatric hospital, and managing a residential group home.

As a clinician, I am passionate about empowering you to meet your own specific goals. My counseling is based on the premise that people have an intrinsic ability to improve and grow when provided with the appropriate tools and experiences. These tools can be refined, learned, and practiced in therapy. While I work with a wide array of issues, I most commonly help people through difficult life transitions, grief and loss, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. I also have a background and specialization in the treatment of addictions and insomnia.

Gambling Therapists

How do gambling rehabilitation programs work?

There are both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs. However, for some individuals, an outpatient facility may not offer enough hands-on care, and for other individuals, an inpatient facility may be too much. Both types of care have knowledgeable health professionals including physicians (in the case of residential programs), psychologists, counselors, psychotherapists, and recovered mentors.

How do gambling 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Abstinence and maintenance are key for 12-step gambling disorder programs. Individuals in a 12-step group rely on each other for support and accountability. In addition, there is often a spiritual element to these programs, whereby belief in a higher power can help the individual overcome their tendencies. If an individual genuinely wants to cease gambling, attending a 12-step program along with regular psychotherapy can be highly effective.

How long does therapy take for gambling disorder?

Recovering from gambling disorder takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but a person can see change if they stick with therapy and if they have the will and desire to stop. Treatment for gambling disorder requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers, as well as the development of coping skills. Making lifestyle changes is also important, such as staying away from lotteries, online gambling, and casinos.

Is relapse a problem for those with a gambling disorder?

Gambling disorder is often chronic and can be life-long; therefore relapse may present a problem for some individuals. But effective treatment can bring a person’s life under control. To remain healthy and on track, the individual may need to regularly check in with their support group or psychotherapist. Frequently refreshing their tools of recovery can be helpful.
