The focus of my practice is on issues related to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and
chronic pain
and other physical health issues.
If you have been seeking solutions to problems without resolution, or you have tried therapy before without success, contact me to discuss a new path. People often look for ways to eliminate bad feelings, or ways to understand their past. You may have declared that you don't want certain things in your life; but as soon as you say that you don't want something the problems expand. I will work with you to find a workable solution - a way to live your life in accordance with your values, and to develop a willingness to be present in your life.

I have over 30 years of experience in the field of psychotherapy in addition to supervising other therapists. My passion for helping people in their lives only continues to increase over the years.
The feedback I receive is how well understood they feel in the therapy.
I have over 18 years of involvement in peer supervision with major emphasis on couples and families. I teach the techniques of mindfulness to assist individuals struggling with anxiety and depression.
Pain
management, habit control or cessation as well a weight loss responds well to mindful awareness which is part of my practice. With many years of using hypnosis as well as EMDR I have found that these tools offer a full range of possible application to PTSD as well as other forms of anxiety disorders. Beyond problem solving in depth psychotherapy is actualizing personal growth which is at the heart of real change and transformation. I have found when people learn the how to of making these changes they have understandings that can last a lifetime.

clients, which is an evidence-based modality for resolving the experience of

Living with chronic
illness
and/or
chronic pain
can be an invisible, isolating, and scary experience. Because of the false mind-body split that underlies our collective consciousness, when someone with a chronic condition seeks care of any kind, the experience can oftentimes feel disjointed, incomplete, and ineffective. I specialize in partnering with my clients to take a holistic approach to healing that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. Ultimately my greatest hope is for my clients to feel a sense of safety in their bodies, and to access hope, a healthy sense of self, and the ability to transform their suffering into meaning.

Life isn't always easy. Even happy occasions can cause emotional stress and anxiety. Utilizing resources such as counseling doesn't mean you are weak or flawed. As a client-focused therapist, my primary objective is to provide a safe and trust-worthy environment where, with warmth and compassion, I will guide you through the exploration of your struggles and help you create a more fulfilling life.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
