It can be difficult to determine what “healthy” alcohol use looks like in a culture that promotes alcohol for every emotion and situation.
You're starting to wonder if you drink too much, and you’re not sure what to do about it. When you try on the word “addiction”, it doesn’t feel quite right, because you meet your responsibilities most of the time. But someone you love expressed concern or maybe even gave you an ultimatum if you don't cut back or quit. You dread the thought that they're right because you can't remember the last day you didn't have a drink, or several, and you don't know how you would cut back or quit even if you decided you wanted to.

My wide range of clinical experience has focused on issues surrounding ADHD, eating disorders, mood disorders, alcohol use disorders and relational issues.
I have a very deep respect for your interest in seeking therapy. It is an honest and brave way to move towards growth. One of my favorite quotes is by Carl Jung: "who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." Our sessions will be a collaborative exploration of your physical state, thoughts, and emotions to help you find some clarity, direction and healing. I aim for change to be deeper than our thoughts. It needs to be felt and integrated. I use Polyvagal theory and EFT/Tapping to inform the psychological work that we will embark on together.

It can be scary when you first realize that your alcohol or drug use has gotten out of control, or when a loved one's use is starting to affect you in negative ways. You see how drug and alcohol use can impact different areas of your life, including things like your job and your relationships with your friends and family. Reaching out for help for the first time can be difficult, fearing that once you share the truth with someone you will be given nothing but judgment in return.

Understanding that trauma and grief are a major source of suffering, I focus on the origin of the problem and not the coping mechanisms which can include isolation, anger issues and drug & alcohol use disorders.
My role and purpose is to help people find their freedom in order to find deep meaning in life and to love freely. The people I see often feel diminished and beaten down by many things including substance use disorders, shame put upon them by others, early childhood trauma and the grief associated with living. In my practice I help people learn skills and ways to cope with their individual issues so that they are able to live with the pain and not in it. I work with many modalities of treatment including Rapid Resolution Therapy used to treat trauma. I provide Acudetox to all my clients at every session for no additional fee.

When you need someone to listen and to offer insight and guidance, I can be that person. Taking the time to really think about and explore options, choices, and to deepen understanding of oneself is what coming to counseling is all about. Many people have a personal trainer for their bodies, I am a personal trainer for your inner life. Transformation begins on the inside before it is seen outwardly. I work with individuals, couples, young people, teenagers and their parents. As a family therapist, making connections and bringing understanding and hope to those feeling troubled and uncertain.

Have you tried everything to make your life better and it doesn't seem to work, or it works for a short time and things go right back to the way they were? Have you used alcohol or drugs to medicate uncomfortable feelings to feel normal, but never really feel normal no matter how hard you try? When we have suffered life-altering disappointments we tend to feel that we are different from others. When we try to connect with others, sometimes it doesn't work out as we anticipated. These disappointments can make us feel there is no hope for us.

Life is sometimes stressful, confusing, and painful, presenting us with unique challenges to overcome. I help clients with clinical and practical interventions to work on goals such as regaining confidence, getting unstuck, stopping drinking, and improving relationships. According to Jon Kabat -Zinn, a mindfulness-based stress expert, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." Embracing and practicing acceptance of pain leads to a decrease in human suffering. I provide therapy for individuals struggling with ADHD, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance and behavioral addictions.

This time of year is stressful and maybe you are questioning your drinking or you know something needs to shift because you feel disconnected from who you want to be. People around you think you have it together, but they don’t know how much you drink or how anxious you feel. It’s exhausting keeping it all together and you want more from your life. Whether you are a gray area drinker, taking a break from drinking or fully in recovery, you are welcome here.

I work with clients who want to improve their relationships, whether they are just hitting some bumps in the road or are on the brink of splitting up. I also use my expertise with couples to help individuals struggling to find and maintain healthy relationships, and those who want to work on their relationship but whose partner isn't yet ready. I don't just work with couples occasionally - relationships are my specialty. This includes working with couples where one or both partners struggle with substance abuse or addiction.

Our individual experiences shape us - they inform our behaviors, perceptions, and attitudes about ourselves and the world around us. In particular our experiences of grief, loss, and trauma have a significant impact on who we are as adults. My work in addictions has shown me the implications that unresolved childhood trauma and grief has on a person, and how it shows up in adulthood. Unprocessed emotions are stored in the crevices of our mind, waiting for the opportunity to be expressed. My goal is to help you process stuck emotions, grief and trauma in a way that works for you, and at your own pace.

***Virtual online therapy only at this time.*** Life can become difficult at times. We have fears and regrets, anxieties and sorrows, insecurities and doubts. People are searching for greater happiness, healthier relationships, increased meaning, and rewarding accomplishments. But despite these challenges, I believe we all have the power to overcome. Hearts can be healed, fears can be conquered, and depression can be overcome. The act of being seen, heard, and understood is healing in and of itself. My approach to therapy is one of being very genuine and often mixing in humor.

I strive to serve the community around me and advocate for those who are in need. I focus on psychotherapeutic models to aid individuals in understanding the role their brain plays in treatment. Educating individuals about brain structure, function, development, and explaining how neurobiology can be applied to individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Interpersonal neurobiology of human development aids us to understand that structure & function of the mind & brain are shaped by our experiences especially involving emotional relationships.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
