Sometimes we feel sad, lonely, anxious, scared, worried, angry or maybe even unsure exactly how we feel, but something feels off. Sometimes when we are really upset we start to feel physical symptoms in our bodies. Sometimes we can feel very irritable or even have outbursts of anger. Sometimes we just can’t stop thinking about something that happened and other times we don’t want to think about it at all. Sometimes we notice ourselves becoming disconnected from others or just not doing what we used to enjoy doing. Sometimes we can’t sleep even if we really want to and feel tired.
My training for my doctorate was in child and family clinical practice and I obtained post-doctoral training in forensic psychology. I also received over 300 hour of training at the Neurosculpting Institute. In addition to my clinical and forensic practice, I have provided consultation services in such settings as Head Start, Federal Corrections, and Child Protection Services and for agencies serving the developmentally disabled. A large part of my practice has always included providing psychotherapy for children, adolescents, couples, and families. I have been married for over 30 years and have seven children.
I believe children and families should dream, thrive, and grow together. I promote child well-being through practical and evidence-based interventions to help children and families with big feelings and big behaviors. My services include individual and family approaches to treat anxiety, depression, childhood behavior problems, attention problems/ADHD, trauma, and emotions/behaviors related to acquired brain injury. My interventions aim to enhance your child's and family's strengths while providing sustainable solutions to improve quality of life. I look forward to meeting you.
I find that respect, genuineness, support and empathy are at the heart of my Psychotherapy practice.I feel that successful therapy is a collaboration between you and I, and is motivated by your needs. Regardless of your goals I can support you in your process. Some people desire to solve an immediate problem, others desire long term depth work. I can be your guide in either type of work. At times we can feel overwhelmed and not know where to turn, a kind, non judgmental, insightful, skilled therapist can help. When we experience challenges we can all benefit from support.

Breathe....There is an ancient Sanskrit symbol that symbolizes this beautiful reminder to do what comes naturally, breathe. It is the first thing we do when we come into this world, and the last thing we do when we leave it. However, life has a way of showing up and making this simple task harder than it seems. The result is we suffer in silence. Seeking therapy is a difficult decision to make but know that you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Allow me to walk with you through this journey of discovery and together we will work to build a healthy foundation that will empower you to make positive changes.

The Creative Arts Therapy Center of Denver (CATCOD) is a safe, inclusive and accepting space for people of all ages where we promote healing and support through psychotherapy. We offer individual, family and group evidence-based services provided by Licensed Professional Counselors. While we are skilled in traditional methods of verbal therapy and assessment, we are also expertly trained to incorporate artistic modalities when appropriate. Creative arts therapy is not dependent on the outcome of the art and there is no art experience necessary. Rather, art-making contributes to healing, holding and growing into our best selves.
I help people overcome anxiety, trauma, and depression. Individuals, families, and groups are welcome. I am passionate about working with diverse clientele, especially people who suffer from traumatic childhoods. I use EMDR, Somatic therapy, talk therapy, and CBT for your unique situation.
My therapy approach is open and honest. I show up as both a human and psychologist, and do not emphasize a professional power hierarchy. I am an advocate for racial justice, LGBTQ+ equality and rights, and human rights more broadly. I am not value neutral on such topics. It is important for my clients to know that my full-time job is as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice at University of Denver’s Counseling Psychology Program where I teach and supervise students learning to be therapists. Therefore, my private practice is part-time and I have limited flexibility for scheduling.

You're not sure why, but the people you love most: your kids, spouse, mother/father/siblings-have turned into triggers that bring out the worst in you. Despite your love for them, you find yourself acting in ways you swore you never would. You're yelling at your kids, always angry at your partner, and you feel like you're always failing. In short, you're hurting the people you love most. You want to show up for your loved ones with peace rather than chaos and stress. You want to ditch the feelings of not being enough.
I'm warm, easy to talk to, a straight-shooter, and a creative problem-solver. I know effective therapy has room for laughter AND tears. Using your strengths as a guide, I'll help you identify and implement new strategies and tools to relieve your relational strain, overwhelm, burnout, complex decisions, and big life transitions.
Anxiety, depression, relationships, work and career, rehabilitation, health and personal wellness are some of the things which challenge us across life. Mapping a way forward can bring a positive sense of relief when these concerns are addressed, and sometimes, at a surprisingly brisk pace.
I work collaboratively with people to help them create the lives they want -- in their relationships, families, recreation and work. This process of exploration and discovery is inspiring and taps into hopes, dreams and imagination through story and re-connecting and remembering memories and experiences of connection and joy in their lives. Clients who benefit most from working with me are usually bright, creative and interested in freeing themselves from the constraints of family, social and cultural expectations that have become internalized and held as truths. This is a way of finding your way home ... to where your heart is.
Have you experienced emotional injuries or relationship struggles? Are you feeling overwhelmed by symptoms of anxiety and/or depression? Or maybe you’re navigating social justice issues in a community or family that doesn’t understand your cultural identities. It is an honor and privilege to work alongside individuals and couples to explore hurtful experiences, establish understanding, find relief from narratives that no longer fit, and achieve the goals they deserve.
