Are you searching for an approach to grow, change, and heal but feel like you don't 'fit the boxes' of the traditional approach to mental health treatment? Do you want to get beyond symptoms and coping and craft a life that works and is worth living? My clients are courageous adults who make the decision to turn toward themselves and their own suffering. They are committed to growing in awareness and want to walk through the world consciously. They are interested in the ‘inner work’ of seeing themselves, their lives, and reality around them clearly. They recognize that efforts to numb, avoid, or distract from their pain don't work.

I help insightful people who are motivated and ready to make changes. I value listening to your "starting point" as you enter therapy. From there, we will build a dialogue that expands your awareness and choices of what else is possible for you in a given situation or relationship. My ideal clients are willing to practice new skills that may energize their communication and feel aligned with their true self.

Does your happiness and self-worth yo-yo up and down depending on the current circumstances of your life? When something which you have no control over goes wrong, do you tend to blame yourself even when you know, logically, that it isn't your fault? The pain of low self-esteem and perfectionism can be hard to live with and sometimes hard to escape from. I love to work with people to improve their feelings of self-worth and lessen the pull of perfectionism.

I offer a compassionate approach to psychotherapy that works through the body to bring unconscious information (often held as tensions, chronic illness , nervous system disorders, anxiety, depression, nightmares, low self-esteem and inabilities to function at full capacity)into conscious awareness, facilitating deep and lasting changes. Our childhood wounds and traumas become blocks to the manifestation of our purpose/gifts. I honor the inherent wisdom of my clients and help them find authentic expression of their gifts. My strengths are my ability to use my intuition to help clients "put the pieces together," and my own personal experience with resolving trauma.

Have you tried talk therapy and are looking for another way to experience change? Many people that I see have said they have tried talk therapy for years and that the integrative approach that they experience with me is the first time they are seeing the results that they wanted. There is a place in everyone that is innately resilient - present, regulated, and capable of being with any pain , fear, and vulnerability. I will guide you to connect to your resilience which is an empowering way to heal, as you will leave with a greater trust in yourself.

Being a human in this world is hard. My office (even when it’s virtual) is a place where your pain and your joy are both welcome. You get to bring the messy, unfiltered, and stuck parts of yourself. The parts you hide from everyone else. You get to take off the mask. All of you is welcome. So often, without even realizing it, we become disconnected from our true Self. We lose touch with the things that bring us joy. We no longer know how to act in alignment with our values. Trauma can take this away from us. But we can come back. Back to our aliveness. Back to our intuition. Back to our true Self. And it is a journey worth taking.

It is because of my own journey with anxiety, chronic illness / pain , and life transitions, that I enjoy helping others through their experiences and overcoming obstacles that impact their life.
I provide individual therapy sessions to young black women who live with chronic health issues and high levels of anxiety. I help clients process the effects of their physical health and heal the impact it has on their mental health. My genuine hope is to create a safe and warm space for you to share your experiences, work through challenges, and develop a sense of acceptance. My belief is that you are the expert of your own care, and that you have all of the tools you need within to become your authentic self. Through empathetic and authentic interactions, we can explore what your experiences mean to you.

For relationships, I serve as a guide to help partners build trust and understanding by learning how to tend to one another's long-protected pain .
How are you doing right now? And what do you need? Maybe you know exactly; maybe you need some help to figure that out. Either way, it's OK. And, I really want to acknowledge your courage in seeking support. If you choose to work with me, I offer a compassionate space for you to work through painful memories or relationship issues, to sort through existential dilemmas, to transition through stages of life, and to make meaning out of the tough things you have been through along the way. My aim is to help you heal, AND to cheer you on as you identify your unrealized potential, re-discover your true self, and reclaim your joy.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
