Stressors related to work, relationships, medical conditions and other key areas of life occur every single day, and sometimes they may become overwhelming and out of control. Most of the time, we are able to help ourselves out of these types of situations, but there are times when it is too challenging to handle alone. When that happens, we often find ourselves stuck and unable to react, or continue to use solutions that may not be the best for us. It can be very draining and demotivating, and spiraling out of control. We sometimes want someone to find a solution for us, while at other times, we just want someone to listen to us.

Perhaps a change in your life is on the horizon or you are experiencing difficulties in your relationships. Maybe you feel stuck in familiar limiting patterns. Illness might be visiting your life and dashing your hopes and plans for the future. We will find our way out of these stuck places together. It’s your journey and I am here to support you in creating an authentic life with healthy connections to others.

I help folks identify, access, and more effectively use their strengths and resilience - even under incredibly difficult and complex circumstances. Clients come to my practice to find alternatives to patterns and behaviors that are no longer working, to heal from traumas, explore identity, navigate transitions, and get unstuck. I work with teens, young adults, and adults who want real change, more support, effective boundaries, and honest connection in their lives using a social justice counseling framework that is client-defined, trauma-informed and strengths-based.

“Change is the only constant in life.” -Heraclitus. This quote captures a significant principle in the human experience. Every single change and transition that we experience is both greivable and celebrateable. I am passionate about imparting support to motivated and engaged individuals, with a special focus on caregivers, first responders, veterans, lgbtqia+ folks, and individuals with alternative lifestyles. I aspire to provide culturally competent, trauma informed care to people in every stage of adulthood for change that they desire, or are coping with.

Something may not feel quite right. Be it an experience of sadness or grief, or that your relationship with food, your work, or others is consuming your time and energy. However you arrive, our first priority will be managing this pain and finding stability to make life more bearable. By approaching ourselves with deep curiosity we can explore and understand the patterns, beliefs, and experiences we have learned to adapt and survive. Ultimately we are building the ability to interpret the world from a new vantage. My goal is that through this work you can find yourself in a space of increased peace, capacity, and potential.

Therapy can be a place to talk about our human struggles and experiences. Purpose and identity, grief and loss, and the nature of our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world are a few areas of human living that might be explored in sessions. Therapy can also be helpful in processing and coping with stressful or traumatic life situations. Developmental and acute trauma, environmental stress, and sociopolitical violence and oppression are some of the external forces that can have a deep impact on wellbeing. Longstanding conditions and adjustment to life changes are also addressed in treatment.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
