Children engage in art therapy, EMDR, pretend play, and guided reflection tailored to their unique needs.
I've always wanted to help children and families thrive. This passion is what drove me to become a therapist and it's what guides my commitment to delivering a positive therapy experience to each family I see. More than anything, I believe that families have unique strengths that will guide them through life's challenging times. I believe in the process of therapy - play therapy and EMDR in particular - as tools to cultivate resiliency, attachment, and problem-solving skills for children and their families.

The Children’s Trauma Center (CTC) provides comprehensive trauma treatment for children ages 3-12. We use treatment models that have proven results. We also believe that imbalances in nutrition, movement, sleep, and connection with others, can have a significant impact on a child’s quality of life and ability to fully participate in effective trauma treatment. At CTC, we attend not only to the trauma treatment, but also to the child's overall health by providing therapeutic "whole health" activities in our indoor garden, kitchen and outdoor space.

The past decade of working with children has allowed me to fully understand how every child is unique, and their needs and behaviors can vary greatly. For example, a child with Autism might have specific sensory sensitivities or communication preferences, while a child with ADHD might bring high energy and impulsivity into the room. In play therapy, my approach is to take time to truly understand the child through our interactions to discover their needs and find the right tools and strategies for managing their emotions and behaviors, while building coping skills and gaining confidence in themselves.

I believe that we can all benefit from connection and support during our lives. I enjoy accompanying people on their journey to well-being and healing. I am passionate about EMDR therapy as a way to treat trauma, depression, anxiety and other challenges. I also use creative approaches with people of all ages, due to my extensive play therapy training. Being a registered play therapist supervisor (RPT-S) helps me to work creatively and compassionately with people across the lifespan. I am also certified in perinatal and infant mental health, so that I can support children, parents and families from the st art.

Through mindfulness, guided meditations, EMDR, and art therapy, I provide clients opportunities to identify and challenge learned belief systems related to traumas and life experiences.
When we’re hurting or just going through a difficult time, so often we feel alone in our experiences. Depression, anxiety, trauma and loss can narrow our perspectives and make us feel disconnected from our loved ones and ourselves. In those moments, it can be hard to access our own sense of worth. I welcome all my clients with unconditional acceptance, wherever they are in their lives, and however they are feeling. I provide clients with tools that encourage and enhance a sense of well being, and offer a compassionate, welcoming, nonjudgmental space to help them connect with their own inner strength and wisdom.

One does not have to be an artist to benefit from art therapy.
Art has the amazing power to release the areas of the mind that have been locked up due to previous traumas and experiences. I truly believe in the inherent healing nature that art provides, allowing us an avenue to reach our clients in a different way and create deeper connections through active engagement in art practices. I utilize mindfulness practices in my therapeutic approach and always encourage clients to look inward to find their own personal strengths to promote their healing. In order to be successful in the art therapy setting, creating a safe space for clients to grow, share, and heal is always priority.

As an art therapist, I know that something transformative happens when clients make art in my presence.
Asking for help is an act of courage and an important step in the process of healing. As a therapist that has worked with teens and young adults for years, I have witnessed the power of therapy at a critical time of development. At this age when we are trying to find ourselves, it can be very challenging to navigate emotions, relationships, and stressors of everyday life. This period of development can also be a rich time for self-discovery, excitement, and growth. I would love to collaborate with you or your loved one to connect with your innate wisdom and values to foster healing, identity development, and resilience.

This life can be painful. The way out is journeying within. While our deep potential is to live from an empowered, compassionate presence-anxiety and depression can obscure our essential nature. We are not immune from loss, change and uncertainty. Yet, with trauma, unmet emotional needs and messages from our culture-we can become overwhelmed with anger, shame and despair. We may try to alleviate our pain with compulsive, distracting or addictive behaviors that may ultimately limit our capacity to connect with ourselves and others. Our suffering intensifies when we feel alone in it, with an inner critic who blames us for hurting.

I am a neurodiversity-affirming Art Therapist.
Do you or a loved one experience and express emotions differently from others? Hyper-focus on interests in a way that allows for a state of ‘flow,’ but pulls from responsibilities and loved ones? Take in more sensory information than others and sometimes get overloaded by it? Has anyone ever suggested that you or your loved one might be Autistic or an ADHDer? While there are many strengths to neurodivergence, there can be difficulties due to living a world that is not designed for or accommodating of different neurotypes. It can also be difficult to know how best to support our loved ones who are Autistic or ADHDers.

Our collective world & many folks’ lives have been increasingly full of change. Transition & change can create struggles as well as opportunities; we can navigate those together. I work with adults, and adolescents facing issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship struggles, identity exploration, life transitions, existential exploration & more while maintaining a strengths-based, neurodiverse-affirming & gender-affirming lens. Some clients enjoy using art; others seek more traditional therapeutic approaches. Regardless of technique, building a compassionate relationship that supports growth is illuminating.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
