How many ways have you tried to help your husband understand what your relationship needs? Explaining, hinting, pleading, complaining, even yelling haven’t worked for more than a week or two. Often, he becomes defensive and argumentative, silently ignores you, or blames you saying you don't make sense. Maybe, it’s his depression, anxiety, trauma, or childhood? You think you still love him, and, after all this time, you don’t want to leave, spend all your relationship energy on the kids, or have an affair. You're tired of feeling stressed, worrying, tossing and turning at night. It shouldn’t be this hard, right?

Everyone experiences trauma at some point in their lives. Anxiety, anger, forgetfulness, fear, sadness, survivor’s guilt, a diminished sense of self and feelings of helplessness are just some of the emotions experienced after a disturbing life-altering event . Rather than trauma, maybe you’re just feeling overwhelmed and stifled. Perhaps the joy you once felt has diminished, and you feel like it’s a struggle to get through a day. Maybe you’ve tried to make changes but find yourself falling back into the same old patterns. Are you going through a challenging transition and needing emotional support and guidance?

Hello, I'm Michael. Life can be extremely difficult to navigate at times, especially when going through major life transitions. It can be frustrating and disappointing as we feel overwhelmed by such realities. It is often tempting to avoid discomfort and difficulty in the hope that things will resolve on their own. It takes courage to deal with such stressors. And when you have the proper skills and perspectives, you will feel equipped to tackle these issues with creative confidence and freedom.

The trails of life can be confusing. Sometimes there are so many to chose from with no clear choice. Other times, the trails grow faint. And still other times, all we can see is one trail, and we aren't thrilled with where it's heading. What we need are questions to help us discern which trail, or new ground to traverse. If you’re looking for the answers, I’m not your guy. If you are courageous enough to ask the questions and look deep, pack a bag. It’ll be a ride.

Life can be difficult in so many ways, ranging from biochemical (eg biological depression) to unexpected and undesired transitions to difficult people and relationships. Learning to cope, developing resilience, and later to thrive in any circumstance is possible, but unlikely to "just happen." It usually takes leaning into uncomfortable feelings, thoughts, and conversations. I have had these conversations thousands of times over the past 20 years. And here's the good news: A better life is waiting for you to discover the key to opening it! There are many methods. All of them take a courageous step of reaching out to a guide/friend.

Do you believe you are doing your best, but life still isn't going as well as you'd like? Maybe you are anxious or depressed and aren't sure how to go forward. Even when you want to change, it can be hard. I believe you simply need help discovering additional resources, understanding your blind spots, and learning how to better utilize your existing strengths. My goal is to help you work through your challenges, learn how to deeply experience life, and respond (not react) to enrich your future. I am a goal-oriented, strongly motivational therapist who looks forward to collaborating to help you create the life you want.

Each of us has the ability to impact the world in a unique and powerful way and we are all born with the desire to deeply connect with others. Struggles with anxiety, depression, insecurity, burnout and stress can discourage us and keep us from realizing our full potential. Counseling gives you the opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood as well as challenged. It is through therapy that we come to understand ourselves more fully allowing personal growth, self esteem and possibly true satisfaction with the life we are given.

An authentic sense of connection within our close relationships, our communities, and to what gives our lives meaning is vital. As a somatic therapist, I work with clients to rebuild that sense of connection first by relating to our own bodies. I support clients in accessing mind-body coherence through nervous system regulation, embodied awareness, and the gentle navigation of how trauma lives in the body. I work with individuals of all identities, with a focus on queer and femme folks, and always bring a social justice lens to help clients reclaim agency, feel more at home in their bodies, and show up more fully in their lives.

At Bjork Counseling my goal is to assist individuals, couples and families to live with more joy and experience healthier relationships with themselves and others. That could mean finding ways to connect with your partner and move through conflict together successfully. It may involve facing trauma, anxiety or depression in order to get the tools to manage it instead of it managing you. If you need support to get through a hard season, I've got you.

Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) Therapists
How does neuro-linguistic programming work?
A therapist using Neuro-linguistic programming might start by building a strong rapport and gathering information about the client’s objectives and any problem areas. Then the NLP therapist will employ NLP techniques to guide their client toward healthier thoughts and behaviors. Clients will learn how to better manage their moods and hone their communication skills. NLP will conclude with the therapist and client making a plan for how to integrate the positive changes into their daily life in the future.

What are some techniques used in neuro-linguistic programming?
NLP therapists often employ anchoring, so the client begins to automatically associate their trigger with a healthier response. Clients also learn how to reframe a situation to change the way they react to it for the better, and how to replace the negative beliefs that are holding them back. Many NLP clients practice visualization or forming a mental image of themselves attaining their goals. Every NLP therapist will have their own preferred approach with specific techniques that they have found to be helpful for their clients.

How long does neuro-linguistic programming take?
Since neuro-linguistic programming is not regulated, the length of treatment can vary greatly. Some therapists may only use NLP in a single session, while others may employ it over the course of weeks, months, or even years. It depends greatly on the type and severity of the problem being treated, as well as the individual client’s response to NLP treatment.

Is neuro-linguistic programming evidence-based?
While some people may find neuro-linguistic programming helpful, either in therapy or in their career or personal development, the science behind this approach is inconclusive. Most of the available studies are small in scale and have produced mixed results, and the commercial nature of NLP lends itself to conflicts of interest. More research is needed. In the meantime, practitioners must use their best judgment of whether NLP techniques will be helpful in meeting their clients’ individual needs.
