As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I specialize in helping individuals navigate through the difficulties of grief, boundary setting,
chronic illness
, and mood disorders. We often need someone to help identify and validate our needs, implement methods to prioritize change, and provide support during what may seem as some of the most trying in life. If you are wanting to find support and build a strong professional rapport with someone that is skilled in these areas as well as understands the importance of putting yourself first, then I would be honored to help.

I specialize in helping Women with
Chronic Illness
and/or PTSD.
Right now everyone's world has turned upside down. Most people in your life don't know what you've really been dealing with. Some days you can barely get off the couch, much less shower. You are exhausted, but can't sleep. From the outside your life might look great, but you feel you are slowly disappearing, unsure who you used to be. Many women with
Chronic Illness
or PTSD feel this way most the time. Often we are afraid of being disbelieved by not only friends and family, but by our Health Care Team as well. It can take years before women are correctly diagnosed. In pain, with complicated symptoms it's easy to feel invisible.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing individual and group therapy. Therapy is not about identifying what you're doing "wrong" and "fixing" it. Therapy is a process through which we curiously learn about who you are and what you want for your life. Then, we look at what you're doing now that is working for you (moving you toward what is meaningful) and what you're doing that's not working for you (moving you away from what is meaningful).

“Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” – bell hooks The healing journey can be an intimidating path, and you don’t have to travel it alone. I believe that the role of a therapist is to walk beside you on your healing path. My top priority is to create a safe, accepting space where you can explore your inner landscape and develop skills to navigate your outer world. I specialize in major life changes (marriage, growing family, divorce, death, career change, etc.) as well as
chronic illness
, terminal illness, and caregiver stress. I also help people who have experienced or are experiencing trauma or grief. All these things can cause you to no longer want to do the things you used to love, things that bring you joy. You feel like you to barely recognize yourself anymore. You may not even be able to put your finger on what happened; all you know is that you are not the same person you used to be, and you don’t like it.

Each one of us has an inherent worth apart from the work we do, people we serve, and labels we receive from others as well as ourselves. There are certain needs that each person has that shape the way we see and experience the world. These needs consist of feeling valued, having your own unique identity, being heard or validated, being seen, known and accepted. Lastly, having a sense of connection and authenticity with others. These do not come easily in our world today as we are taught the opposite and in turn we don’t have a clue how to identify our needs, let alone communicate this to others. Let me help teach tangible tools.

My approach to many issues we might face is that with a change in our mindset or normal path of thinking, we most likely have solutions to our concerns within ourselves. By changing our mindset or charting a new path we can find healing and peace. Sometimes we have to dig deep and look at situations from a different angle to see how we can take control and make the change we desire to achieve our best. I'm here to help you address areas where you feel like you could be struggling and discover new perspectives to help find a different path forward.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
