When you are struggling to move past conflicts or getting stuck in all-too-familiar patterns, there should be something so direct, personal, and real about what you discover and practice in therapy that it should dramatically change how you think, feel, and act with others. Therapy should captivate and transform you. That's my specialty. Yet, even though therapy is serious work, there should be room for play: for trying things on, for practice, for being human. As a Certified Emotionally Focused Couple and family therapist, I care about the quality of your relationships. My approach? Connecting. Pragmatic. Thorough. Creative.

I'm an individual and family therapist, also a substance use disorder counselor. My education and 17 years' experience enables me to work with individuals as they recognize and manage the impact of their (or that of their loved ones) substance use on their world. Apart from SU issues, I also support clients navigating life transitions, recovering from loss, or experiencing conflicts within their network of interpersonal relationships. I especially enjoy working with individuals with difficulty managing moods (depression, anxiety, anger, etc.), developing and practicing a plan for positive change.

I love working with people who are curious about making change - whether it's healing, growing, learning, or exploring their identity and goals. My passions are resiliency, creativity, and connection. I want to help clients foster these traits and forge new paths forward. I help clients use their existing strengths to overcome obstacles and to help them learn about how our past experiences and beliefs manifest in our present bodies, minds, feelings, and behaviors. I also use art, music, and movement as therapeutic interventions to help the body process trauma and overwhelming stressful experiences.

The first time I heard the saying "Nothing About Us Without Us" I fell in love, and I now have regular, ongoing consultation with autistics, including autistic counselors. I'm here to make life easier, kind of like a Mental-Health Interpreter, bridging the gap between the autistic and neurotypical world. Together, we can focus on easier communication, promoting understanding, building connections, and ensuring access to a life worth living. Or, maybe on just making it through the next week. My approach is strictly NON ABA, NON-behaviorally-focused, and highly trauma and PDA-informed.

It's important to find a counselor you feel safe and comfortable with. In my experience clients find it hard to open up in counseling if they experience the counselor as inauthentic. I remain genuine throughout the counseling experience in order to promote a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. While I see the benefits of specific counseling techniques and interventions, I believe the counselor-client relationship is the most important aspect of counseling. As a counselor, my job is to empower you, assist you in your journey of self exploration, challenge you, and consider the impact of culture and identity

Life can be overwhelming when you spend your days caring for others while your own needs go unmet. You can't look away from the news, but it feels impossible to function while you watch the world burn. Leaving a high-control religion is challenging, as you work to figure out your own values and and how to navigate family dynamics moving forward. You want to be a different kind of parent to your kids, but despite your best efforts, you find yourself yelling at them. You don’t want to spend your life hating your body, but you don’t know if you can let go of control. If any of this resonates with you, you are not alone.

Secular and Non-Religious Therapists
What is a secular and non religious approach in therapy?
Secular or non-religious therapy is a theoretical orientation used by many therapists and describes a therapeutic approach that does not rely on any specific religious or faith-based beliefs in the therapeutic process. Secular counselors will often approach therapy with an emphasis on evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients, instead of relying on religious practices, such as prayer or belief in God.

Is secular therapy primarily for non-religious people?
Both religious and non-religious individuals can benefit from secular therapy. People exploring their religious or spiritual beliefs may find it especially useful to work with a secular therapist who is unbiased toward any specific religion. While religious individuals might value the connection and familiarity of seeing a counselor who shares their beliefs, secular counseling can offer them the chance to develop coping skills independent of their religious practice, which can be beneficial in various aspects of their lives.

Can a secular approach to therapy help with religious trauma?
One major reason clients may seek a secular therapist is to process previous religious experiences, including religious trauma. Secular therapists can help clients manage symptoms of the trauma through practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). They can also encourage clients through talk therapy or psychodynamic approaches to explore the roots of their religious trauma. Since secular therapists do not have any predetermined religious beliefs, they can be particularly helpful for clients looking to explore their own religious beliefs following a history of religious trauma.

What does non religious marriage and premarital counseling involve?
Marriage and premarital counseling typically involves a couple meeting with a therapist to discuss topics such as planning for marriage, navigating a new marriage, addressing relationship challenges, and developing better communication and conflict resolution skills. Non-religious therapists assist couples in achieving these goals without adhering to specific religious beliefs or frameworks, often emphasizing inclusivity and non-judgment, especially for "nontraditional" couples. However, seeking couples therapy from a non-religious counselor does not mean religious topics are off-limits. In fact, non-religious couples from different religious backgrounds may benefit from a secular therapist who remains neutral toward the beliefs of each partner.
