Carrie Plachko
Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate, MS, LPCC
Castle Rock, CO 80104
My background includes evidence-based approaches: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed yoga, somatic and nervous system integration, and mindfulness-based interventions.
Sometimes people come to therapy because they’re anxious or depressed, or because they have a diagnosed mental health condition. Sometimes they come because they’re exhausted from just trying to manage life. They know something needs to change, but they don’t know where to start. I believe therapy isn’t about “fixing” you. It’s about helping you better understand yourself, recognize the patterns keeping you stuck, and build a life that feels authentic and meaningful- not just manageable.

I support children and adults who are healing from complex trauma, narcissistic abuse, and/or navigating difficult relationships. I work with survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, traumatic grief, gun violence, and emotionally neglectful or unsafe childhood environments. Many people come to therapy feeling disconnected from themselves, unsure how to trust their instincts, or struggling with boundaries and self-doubt. If this feels familiar, you are not alone. Healing is possible, and you deserve care that feels steady, compassionate, and supportive.

Life can be tough or overwhelming at times. It is only natural to shut down, become numb or lash out at others. You can regain the vitality and joy. Find the courage it takes to work it through. Together we can create a safe environment to explore, uncover and rebuild your authentic self. Pain is inevitable. Attempting to avoid pain creates suffering. Facing it builds courage, strength and resilience. Choose your life!

Hi! I'm glad you're here. Finding a therapist can feel scary and difficult, so take a breath. You might look like you have it together on the outside, but inside feel anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck. You may feel disconnected from yourself or others, like you’re going through the motions but not fully in your life. Maybe you’ve been to therapy before and it helped, but the deeper patterns are still there. I use IFS and other mind-body approaches to help high functioning adults understand these patterns, often shaped by emotionally immature relationships, so you can soften your inner critic and feel more like yourself.

My specialty is Autonomic Healing Activation (AHA) and Relationship Therapy. AHA is a brain exercise that activates your brain to normalize stress for the mind, body, and spirit. If you don't believe in a spirit, you can focus on mind and body activation. Neurobiologically, the brain produces a way for you to heal, persevere, and grow by managing physical and/or emotional pain. Yes, this approach also works for physical illness and chronic pain. After I teach you, you can practice AHA on your own every day if you wish.

I specialize in anxiety, trauma, relationship repair, and men's issues, using somatic, attachment-based, and emotion-focused approaches.
Something isn't working and part of you knows it. Maybe it's showing up in your relationship as quiet distance, recurring arguments that go nowhere, or the feeling that you've become strangers in the same house. Maybe it's internal- the overthinking at 2 a.m., the edge in your voice you didn't intend, the exhaustion of holding everything together while feeling disconnected from yourself. You're capable, high-functioning, and still not okay. That's not weakness. That's a signal worth listening to. You don't have to untangle this alone, and you don't have to settle for a version of your life that just looks fine from the outside.

I have engaged with additional EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), relational trauma/attachment, and somatic trainings.
You’ve been to therapy before, but it keeps feeling more like bandaids than breakthrough. And you’re worried the problem is you. Things start off okay, until the inevitable plateau hits and you keep leaving sessions feeling frustrated and empty. Something’s definitely missing, but you can’t put your finger on what. You just know it hasn’t led to the lasting change you crave. Motivated to do deep work and ready to get at the root, you’ve outgrown the one-size-fits-all approach. Annd it’s also a little scary going to those deeper layers.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
