“Every choice you make takes you closer to or further away from where you want to be.” This has been a guiding principle of both my life and my counseling practice. I am confident that I have the experience to help support and guide you to get where you want to be. And, just as important, I have the wisdom to know when what is required is not my area of expertise. Whether the choice has to do with an exciting possibility or traumatic situation, helping you decide where you want to be and then evaluating whether your choices take you closer to or further from that destination, is what my practice is about.

You crush it at work, but you feel like a total failure in your relationships. Exhaustion and hopelessness color your existence like a dark fog. Caffeine and self-propulsion are your two best friends. Relationships should be fulfilling, right? Then why do you feel so numb, disengaged, and often embarrassed by your emotional reactions? Sure, you hit your numbers at work. But your reward is dragging yourself home to a lonely, sexless marriage. Another conflict ensues. Your partner's judgmental stare leaves you feeling ashamed and like you’re 5 years old again. Let’s face it – you haven’t felt loved in years.

Welcome to my psychoanalytic practice for adults. Our minds have a huge influence on how we think and feel each day; slowing down and noticing subtle aspects of ourselves with a trained analyst can provide much needed integration of powerful emotions that have not yet had a voice for expression. People can articulate emotions without feeling them, experience emotions in the body, can't find words, and unthinkingly go into action never quite feeling satisfied. Integrating feelings and thoughts vitalizes human life.

I have worked in a variety of settings during my 20 years in the field of mental health. These include medical and psychiatric hospitals, substance abuse treatment facilities, college counseling centers and, for the past twelve years, my private practice. This breadth of experience is a great asset and allows me to feel comfortable working with almost any client issues, but I still find that a grounded common sense is my best tool as a therapist. I also feel that I am able to express my perceptions in a manner that clients are able to hear, understand and take into consideration.

My ideal clients are those who feel deeply, tend to overthink, and are moving through big life transitions in relationships, identity, school, work, or family roles. Many are navigating grief, burnout, or the weight of expectations while trying to stay connected to who they are. I am LGBTQ+ affirming, neurodiversity-affirming, and experienced supporting non-traditional relationships. Drawing on my background as a middle and high school social worker and my global travel-informed lens from growing up in Norway and traveling widely, I help clients slow down to make sense of what they’re feeling.

People have an inherent need to be understood and tell their story in order to live the life they imagine. My job as therapist is to listen, and learn from you and guide you toward better self-care, and to make the changes necessary to look inside yourself to see what might be holding you back from living a full happy life. As a licensed clinical social worker, I believe often times the things which keep us from moving forward are in our environment, such as toxic relationships, poverty, lack of education, drugs and alcohol, and past traumas.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists
What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?
By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?
Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?
It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
