I work with people who have chronic illness and chronic pain , and I can help you learn how your emotional, mental, and physical health are intertwined.
We follow many paths in life in a continuous flow, yet if we hit a log jam it can be impossible to move at all. Activities of daily life become stressful, relationships tense, work, too hard. Our inner critic quickly points out flaws, and we can begin to doubt our abilities. Anxiety and depression, stop us. Then illness or pain start to come, and pushing beyond our limits leads to emotional despair or “chronic” health issues. Eventually we wonder how we got here, and how or if, we can get back to our flow, yet we don’t know where to begin. If this is you, don’t give up, or give in.

Specialty areas I include in my practice are adolescents (such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, school and family issues), grief/loss/transitions (death of a loved one, chronic or life threatening illness , pet loss, separation or divorce, job change/loss), women's issues (pregnancy, hormones), as well as working on relationships with couples and families.
Life is full of challenges. I believe these challenges can also be stepping stones to our own personal growth. Whether stress from a job, a relationship issue or perhaps experiencing depression or anxiety, everyone deserves to have a non-judgmental, safe place to be able to talk. As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, I strive to make my office a comfortable environment where those "hard conversations" can happen, resulting in a deeper understanding of what roles we play in relationships as well as how our thoughts impact how we feel and act.

I have clients that come to therapy for a wide range of issues. Most often, client goals begin with relief from pain , sadness, guilt, shame, confusion, addiction and many other symptoms related to distress. I have found that many clients who seek therapy are surprised to learn how past and present are related and how someone can influence future through choice, meaning, and intentional use of personal strengths. I am passionate about keeping the therapeutic relationship collaborative and empathic, while striving to weave empirical interventions with hope and perseverance.

Life isn't easy. Maybe you feel a vague sense that something is not quite right. Or things might be so overwhelming that it feels like your inner world is collapsing and your external world is turned upside down. Perhaps from the outside things look ok, yet on the inside there is a deep pain , or you feel dead inside. Maybe you are living in the grips of what seems like an endless place of despair and trauma. It is possible to move past stuckness and the cycle of yuckyness to a place beyond survival that allows release, growth, joy and a sense of purpose.

Play therapy is the research-based treatment of choice for children struggling with: anxiety and withdrawn behavior, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Reactions, trauma, abuse and neglect, chronic or terminal illness , hospitalization, adoption and foster-care, grief, divorce, family violence, aggression and acting out behavior.
Are you worried that your preschooler's abrupt mood swings will be a problem when she enters kindergarten? Is your third grader easily frustrated, teary and self-deprecating over an inability to get things right? Are you discouraged because of your fourth grader's consistently angry and disrespectful behavior? Raising a child with difficult behaviors can be exhausting. . . As a play therapist and parent resource, I help parents have more harmonious and enjoyable relationships with their children.

As is the case for many professionals in this field, my childhood was significantly impacted by trauma and mental illness .
I am a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of experience. I provide individual therapy for those age 17 and older. Issues I commonly work with include anxiety, panic, relationship issues, grief and loss, depression, anger, sexual trauma, intimate partner abuse, PTSD, childhood abuse/neglect, and medical trauma/chronic disease. In my practice, I aim to provide professional expertise within a context that is comfortable and non-intimidating. Clients generally appreciate my warm and friendly personality, the clear feedback and direction I provide, and the opportunity to intersperse some laughter throughout the process.

A particular area of focus for me is supporting people who are going through life changing illness and pain management.
As a hypnotherapist I work mostly with clients who want to change unwanted behaviors like quitting smoking and losing weight. Presently, I have trained in a program called Virtual Gastric Band which is using the mind to help constrict the amount and type of food ingested. In addition I am using a highly successful method to support people to stop smoking. Several other areas I work with are Phobias, Memory, relaxation, self-esteem, grief and many more.

We are a mental health practice that serves the Denver area specializing in neuropsychological, behavioral health, pain assessment and management, and other health concerns for children, adolescents, and adults.
Our approach utilizes the biopsychosocial approach to evaluation and treatment; this means we strive to understand the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence the health and wellness of our clients. Our services are often referred to as "behavioral medicine" or "medical psychology;" this is due to taking a holistic approach in our treatment considering the whole person - physical, mental, emotional, and social. We often work collaboratively with other professions such as primary care physicians, occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains, and others who are important to one's individual network of care.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
