Research shows play therapy can help
children
learn: to respect themselves and others, identify their feelings and that their feelings are acceptable, self-control, to assume responsibility for self, to be creative and resourceful in confronting problems, self-direction, self-acceptance, and to make responsible choices.
Are you worried that your preschooler's abrupt mood swings will be a problem when she enters kindergarten? Is your third grader easily frustrated, teary and self-deprecating over an inability to get things right? Are you discouraged because of your fourth grader's consistently angry and disrespectful behavior? Raising a
child
with difficult behaviors can be exhausting. . . As a play therapist and parent resource, I help parents have more harmonious and enjoyable relationships with their
children
.

My goal is to provide a safe and validating place for
children
to make sense of their experiences and heal.
I have been working with
children
and families since 2004 and have developed the philosophy that therapy guides us through complicated emotions, helps us make sense of our experiences, and empowers us to make healthy choices for ourselves. Issues such as adoption, attachment, trauma, and disruptive behaviors are often frustrating for families but can be overcome with therapeutic support.

I work with
children
, teens, and adults who might be experiencing overwhelming feelings and emotions, are stuck in disruptive patterns, or are feeling detached from the things that were once loved. Perhaps there has been a significant change, traumatic event or challenges at school that have made things feel different than the way they were. Sometimes you might not be sure what has changed but feel that something is just not right. Support can be helpful if you or your
child
are struggling with sleep concerns, physical aches and pains, behavioral changes, or an overall sense of worry or stress.

In order to assist both
children
and their parents in self discovery, I utilize both traditional talk therapy techniques as well as creative arts and play therapy interventions.
Due to Covid and some personal life changes, I will be offering online sessions only at this time. Being a parent is an incredibly overwhelming and rewarding role and in the same breath, sometimes it is not very easy to be kid trying to communicate with your parent either. Subscribing to the notion that no one
child
or family can "fit" into a box, I encourage confidence in individuality and assisting
children
and families in exploring their shared values and finding a way to use their "differences" as strengths. In family therapy, I strive to increase acceptance, understanding, and enjoyment in the family dynamic.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
