Veterans Therapists in Boulder, CO
Perhaps you’re a veteran, service member, or part of a military-connected family and know how hard it can be to explain some experiences to those outside that world.
My approach is warm, thoughtful, and grounded in contemplative, relational, and mindfulness-based therapy. For more than 20 years, I’ve helped adults and couples make sense of what they’re carrying, understand patterns that keep them stuck, and find steadier ways forward. I also offer specialized care for veterans and military-connected clients.

Finding a therapist is exhausting, especially when you're already running low. Scrolling profiles, reading bios, wondering "is this the person?" It's a real bet costing time, money, & the vulnerable act of just showing up. I've been there. Not metaphorically, I grew up inside the kind of chaos that brings a lot of people to therapy. I know what it costs to reach out when hope is thin. That's part of why safety isn't just a word I use. It's what I build first, every time & for couples & trauma especially, it's the whole ballgame. When people feel genuinely held here, something shifts that understanding alone never could.

The human brain is a remarkable machine. It can solve complex problems, imagine the future, and recall embarrassing things you said in 2011 in excruciating detail. It’s also quite brilliant at creating problems and adopting habits that make life easier…at first. Avoid pain. Control discomfort. Reduce risk. Play it safe. But over time, those habits quietly make life smaller often without us seeing it. When these patterns begin organizing your life, it can help to step back and look at what the brain is doing (and why), how behavior preserves those patterns, and what becomes possible when two people think through it together.

You’re at a crossroads, feeling stuck in a body that’s perpetually "on guard." Whether you’re a Veteran weary from the armor of service, a Queer adult navigating the nuances of identity discovery, or a seeker tired of the cycle of anxiety, depression and addiction, you have reached a point where the pain of staying the same is greater than the fear of changing. Maybe you’ve talked about your trauma for years, but your nervous system is still in survival mode. You aren't just looking for a listener; you are ready for a metamorphosis and a life built on your own wants, not just your needs.

Additionally, I use Third Culture Kid (TCK) grief debriefing techniques and specialize in supporting military and expat populations.
“I constantly have racing thoughts.” “I feel tense and on edge all the time.” “I’m irritable and end up fighting with my partner or my kids, then feel guilty.” “I feel like I don’t fit in.” “Past trauma is impacting my anxiety and depression.” These are some of the concerns I hear from clients. I provide practical tools to manage current challenges while also exploring the root of the issues to improve your future well-being.

I work with queer and trans adults, neurodivergent folks, parents, and veterans facing burnout, masking, trauma, and food or body struggles.
If you're exhausted from masking all day, holding everything together, and crashing the moment you're finally alone, you're not broken for feeling tired, angry, or numb in a culture that keeps asking you to be smaller. If you're a queer, trans, or neurodivergent adult or parent looking for a therapist who actually gets it — someone who understands masking, sensory overload, trauma, and food and body struggles — I'd be glad to work with you. You can unmask here. I'm an LPCC at Affirm Counseling, practicing under the supervision of Tyler Woody, LPC. I offer online therapy across Colorado.

Healing is rarely linear; it’s a journey of stops & starts that uncovers, examines, experiments with & integrates our experiences. You may be someone who has done deep inner work and spent years in therapy, or you may also be new to therapy & simply noticing that anxiety, low mood, or shutdown are getting in the way of how you want to live. You might understand why these patterns exist, or you may just know that your body feels tense, overwhelmed, or disconnected. When insight alone hasn’t brought the relief you hoped for, we gently shift toward safety and nervous system regulation, allowing your innate capacity to heal to emerge.

My background is diverse, thanks to my experience in prisons, the military, and community mental health.
Barbara brings experience, warmth, and humor to the therapeutic environment and creates a welcoming space for client concerns and challenges. She employs Internal Family Systems (IFS) methods to help clients learn to understand their "bad actors" (personality parts that engage in impulsive or harmful behaviors), as well as those that manage the client's life and keep them out of trouble. Barbara facilitates clients' re-discovery of their own vast internal resources and with this, they begin to realize their authentic qualities and strengths. . . . . . Veterans Therapists
Why is mental health important for veterans and the military?
Veterans are more likely to face mental health challenges than the general public, and such mental health challenges can make it difficult for them to navigate day-to-day life. Improved mental health can result in better interpersonal relationships, lower levels of stress, and decreased dependence on substances, such as drugs or alcohol, for many veterans. Addressing common mental health conditions can also help facilitate recovery from physical health challenges that are faced by many veterans, such as chronic pain, physical injury, or poor sleeping patterns. Therapists trained in working with veterans can help address these concerns and help improve veteran mental health.
How can veterans get access to mental health support?
There are many resources for veterans to get mental health support, including through the VA or through their primary care doctor. Many service personnel are eligible for free or reduced-cost mental health counseling through the VA, depending on their service history and current income. Veterans can also utilize online directories, such as Psychology Today, or nonprofit organization resources like the Wounded Warrior Project, to find a therapist or other healthcare professional that specializes in their specific mental health needs. Veterans may also benefit from community-based groups that facilitate social connection and/or address specific concerns, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
What type of therapy is best for veterans?
Veterans may benefit from multiple types of therapy, depending on what mental health challenges they are facing. Veterans seeking therapy for anxiety or depression may benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which encourage clients to understand how their thought patterns influence their behavior. Veterans with PTSD may seek other more specialized forms of therapy to treat trauma symptoms, such as EMDR or exposure therapy. Many veterans and military personnel may also benefit from family or couples counseling to address the stress and adjustment challenges that can be associated with military life.
Can therapy for veterans help with trauma and PTSD?
Therapy can be highly effective in helping veterans with trauma and PTSD. Therapists specializing in veteran mental health often have extensive training and experience helping veterans navigate symptoms of trauma and can teach clients coping techniques to handle common symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. Some therapists may use talk therapy as their primary approach, while others utilize more structured therapy modalities in sessions, such as EMDR. Veterans can try multiple therapy modalities to find the best fit for them. Therapists can also help make referrals or connect clients with available resources, such as VA benefits, to help address other life concerns.
