"I have not met a more wholehearted counselor than Dr. Horowitz in 40 years of working with so many," wrote author Stephen Levine. Your courageous reach for help is the first, hardest step. I have been through a number of disasters, incl. 2 large fires, 1 earthquake, deaths & my sister's psych hospitalization, & that's helping me to help folks adjust to CVIDS-19. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or pain, you can be helped via research-based tools. We'll first revisit your positive attributes: your accomplishments, talents, & passions are fuel for growth & change. We humans can re-learn, thankfully.

Carl Rogers said, when we accept ourselves as we are, then we can change. Focusing on the individual and their unique capability toward healing is the guiding approach I take in therapy. I work with great curiosity to explore the distractions and negative cycles that may be keeping you stuck. The struggle for clarity is a difficult one to navigate in isolation; together we can look at patterns and behaviors that no longer service you. The therapeutic process is one of finding balance between the emotional and rational, the mind and body and bringing that forward into our lives.

Disconnected, stuck, unmotivated, or deeply pained teens improve with therapy. If your teen is glued to their phone, failing school, has experienced a traumatic event, suicide attempt, is self-harming, abusing drugs, or has parents going through a divorce - we've seen it all. The teen experience is tough! At Antelope Recovery, we understand that not all teens want to go to therapy, but they know that what they're currently doing isn't working, and they want to feel better. We also specialize in helping teens who have tried other types of help, such as 1:1 therapy or medication but have not experienced significant improvement.

Finding a therapist is like finding a good avocado at the grocery store:
If they’re available right now, something is probably wrong, right?
All jokes aside, let's face it, you don't want to be here, because therapist shopping objectively sucks.
You're probably going through hell right now.
That doesn't make you a failure, there is no shame in that.
That means you are human: a complicated bundle of bones and amino acids, eccentricities and aspirations, battle scars. But remember, at your core is a person who has access to courage, creativity, and wisdom capable of transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth.

Whether you're struggling with substance use yourself or watching someone you love disappear into addiction, you deserve real support.
I work with individuals, couples, and families—and I run recovery-focused groups throughout the week. The relationship between us matters as much as the techniques we use. Many of us learned unhealthy patterns from past relationships. In therapy, we get to experience something different. That's where the real healing happens. Let's start the conversation.

Anxiety, trauma, and relationship conflict can make emotions spike fast, leaving you reactive or exhausted. You might fear abandonment, swing between closeness and distance, or feel stuck in shame, anger, or impulsive choices. You may use substances, self-harm, or blowups to relieve unbearable intensity. Some clients come in with a BPD diagnosis–many don’t–but the patterns are similar and treatable. You are not alone, and you don’t have to white-knuckle it. With the right support, people often see change–steadier moods, fewer crises, healthier boundaries, and more satisfying connections–helping them live a happier life.

You’re a capable adult whose struggles feel loud: anxiety that won’t switch off, patterns with food and body that steal joy, focus and follow-through challenges from ADHD, or the grief and confusion of a breakup or major life shift. You want steadier mood, a calmer relationship with food, clearer routines, and hope. I offer a kind, research-based space to understand what’s driving symptoms, build practical skills, and create a plan that fits your life—so you can feel more grounded, confident, and connected day to day.

You’ve been trying so hard to keep up and hold everything together, but the anxiety, pressure, and constant self-criticism keep pulling you back into the same exhausting patterns. Some days you cope by trying to control things; other days you turn to substances or familiar habits just to get a moment of relief from your mind. You start each morning with good intentions, yet by the end of the day the guilt, frustration, or overwhelm creeps in again. You’re tired of pushing through alone, exhausted by the cycle, and you’re finally ready for something to shift.

As a result I have extensive experience with severe mood and personality disorders, substance use and family systems.
Finding the right support shouldn’t be so difficult. It can be really challenging just to identify all of the relevant factors in why we seek treatment. When we are ready to make change because something is not working, there is not always a simple answer or one intervention. Often we need to look from multiple perspectives and approach things in different ways to solve life’s complicated issues.
I have extensive experience working with clients, spouses and family members of those with substance issues, narcissistic or antisocial traits. Internal boundaries, expectations and identifying core values is at the heart of this work.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
