Disconnected, stuck, unmotivated, or deeply pained teens improve with therapy. If your teen is glued to their phone, failing school, has experienced a traumatic event, suicide attempt, is self-harming , abusing drugs, or has parents going through a divorce - we've seen it all. The teen experience is tough! At Antelope Recovery, we understand that not all teens want to go to therapy, but they know that what they're currently doing isn't working, and they want to feel better. We also specialize in helping teens who have tried other types of help, such as 1:1 therapy or medication but have not experienced significant improvement.

The somatic/ dance movement therapy approach is a powerful means through which to process trauma, addiction to substances and/or sex, childhood trauma, impulse behaviors, self-harming behaviors, and eating disorders.
I believe the therapeutic relationship serves as a catalyst for understanding where we come from, and how our survival strategies and coping skills have benefitted us in the past, while also shining a light on which ones may be due for an upgrade. With a witness, and using principles of somatic therapy we can begin to excavate the limiting beliefs taking up valuable real estate in our psyche and put in motion an upshift of our self-concept. The therapeutic container acts as a vessel in which to recontextualize who we have been, who we are now and who we want to become.

I love learning from my clients and journeying with them as they learn skills to cope with difficulties in life such as depression, cutting , anxiety, relationship issues, bullying, trauma, abuse, and more.
My approach looks at people holistically concentrating on the interactions between thoughts, emotions, physical wellness, and spirituality. I do not have a cookie cutter approach and understand that life and individuals are complex. The relationship between therapist and client is the driving force for change; therefore my number one goal is to build a strong and supportive alliance. I use play therapy with children and expressive therapies (art and creative writing) with clients of all ages. I enjoy working in creative ways with clients when it is a good fit.

I love working alongside adults and teens who are ready to explore what is going on underneath their symptoms. Clients I support seek therapy for help with anxiety, depression, self-harm, and/or suicidal ideation among other difficult things. Often (though not always), clients are part of the LGBTQ+ community and are interested in figuring out how their experience of gender identity and/or sexuality fits into their mental health and lives. First, we get to know you better while we find ways to cope with symptoms. When you’re ready, we take a deep dive together into what’s causing life to feel hard, unmanageable, or even unlivable.

I work with clients who live with intense emotions, debilitating depression, immense anxiety, anger, trauma, or the urge to avoid feeling all together. For many this can lead to unrelenting crisis, self invalidation, being hijacked by emotions, impact relationships, and reinforce behaviors that are not in line with the life they want. I create a space to support clients with non-judgmentally looking at their thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that prompt suffering and inhibit access to long term goals. I support clients with recognizing the function of these behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that prompt pain and help find resolution.

I have spent my career working with adolescents, young children, and their families. I started my career as a high school English teacher, but quickly realized my passion for mental health and helping adolescents manage their mental health in order to learn and engage fully. Inspired by my teaching experience, I pursued a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling and transitioned from the role of classroom teacher to school counselor. I ultimately decided to leave the school system to follow my heart and work full-time for Kairos Wellness Collective.

Therapy and mindfulness practice are not just a career, they are a lifestyle. Since I can remember, I knew that my journey as a social worker and mental health professional was meant to serve those with trauma and high levels of anxiety. My experience in these realms lies not only in the work I do with my clients, but within myself. As we navigate our emotions together in the therapy space, I have committed to continuing my own self care outside of the room to better understand the tools I’m providing to my clients.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
