Life isn’t a prison. It’s a playground. As a queer, trauma-informed therapist, I help clients break free from oppressive systems and reconnect with their playful, empowered, fully alive selves. Learning to be goofy is a form of resistance. Together, we’ll explore healing through laughter, compassion, and emotional congruence. I specialize in supporting: • LGBTQIA+ and gender-expansive folks • Neurodivergent clients (ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivity) • Creatives, deep feelers, and those who’ve always felt “other” • Individuals with complex trauma or dissociation • Spiritually curious clients asking big questions

Hello, I'm Dr. Fran Weitzel. My journey into the mental health field began back in my high school years, driven by a deep interest in psychology. Initially, I pursued a career as an elementary school teacher, but I found myself consistently drawn to continuing education courses that focused on students' emotional and mental health. While working towards a master's degree in clinical psychology to advance my teaching career, I had the chance to see clients for therapy.

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. My practice is built on the philosophy that the therapy must fit the person. This work is rooted in a mentorship with Fred Pine and conducting research in Daniel Stern’s lab. As pioneers who integrated development and attachment into psychoanalytic theory, their clinical insights continue to influence my practice today. This provides the lens through which I view those in crisis, with anxiety, and trauma, as well as those navigating the impact of a parent or partner with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

I’m honored to work with people feeling heartache inside the constraints of our modern world. Through conditioning + relational wounding, we temporarily lose touch with the deep innate wisdom of our minds + bodies. Life can feel chaotic and daunting - we question ourselves and can lack the feeling of vitality. If you long to experience belonging as your true self, I’m here to guide you back to safety in relationship with yourself, your body + others. I was brought to this meaningful work through my personal experience of rising above trauma. I’m devoted to helping others out of the depths of struggle + into fulfillment & connection.

Breaking through the barriers. What keeps you from true happiness and living the life you truly love? Perhaps you are in an unfulfilling intimate relationship that is not meeting your needs, or you desire a long-term meaningful partnership but keep finding that area to be a struggle. Are friendships and community challenging? Is your relationship with your family or particular family members in conflict? Often it is a need to learn to cope with difficult emotions such as anxiety and fears, negative thinking or challenging relationships that keep you from experiencing a life of joy and happiness.

My therapeutic approach is client-centered, attachment-focused, and psychodynamic.
About me: I specialize in women's issues, trauma, grief, relationships, anxiety, and life transitions. About you: You are intelligent, sensitive, and high-functioning. You appear to others as though you have it all together, but inside, something's not working. Perhaps this manifests physically, as insomnia or chronic tension. Sometimes it's more internal: hypervigilance or depression, indecision, heaviness, or an inability to move past a traumatic event. You seek answers to life's biggest questions, but sometimes have trouble hearing your own inner wisdom. You wish to feel more ease, more clarity, more connection, more meaning.

The days are blurring together. There’s a pressure in your chest that won’t go away. It’s hard to breathe because you are so overwhelmed. You see everything that’s not working but feel out of control. Distracting yourself with friends, alcohol, exercise, etc. used to work. Now, you’re stuck at home, unable to distract yourself for long. You hate who you are. Up to this point, you were surviving, but you want more. You think, “if only I wasn’t so sensitive.” Your whole life you’ve felt small, judged, shamed. There has to be more. You don’t want to be that person anymore, and you need help. You need someone to see the real you.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
