You are unique, and have something valuable to express, offer, and live. We suffer when we feel cut off from this, when the circumstances and experiences of life do not reflect our deepest knowing of self. Depression, anxiety; feeling stuck, lost, dissatisfied with life.. addiction, unhealthy relationships, illness, loss.... These are all opportunities to learn to love oneself more fully; invitations to transform and heal. I help people restore clarity, connection, love, and get to the root of what blocks their full aliveness.

Our play and emotion based strategies help your child handle hard things, overcome fears, and connect with themselves and others.
Is your kiddo lacking confidence, overwhelmed by their emotions, yet you know deep inside there is a magical human just waiting to be discovered? I work with children who are highly intellectual, empathic, and feeling beings who oftentimes have been targeted by schools, peers, and teachers as being the "problem." The truth is they are not the problem and you know this, but yet their everyday functioning is being hindered. Getting to school or having play dates often seems like more of a challenge for you than the other families you know.

Play therapy creates the space for children to share their inner and outer experiences, and to thereby process and integrate.
The power of the spoken word, and understanding its limits . . . Incorporating and expanding the impact of talk therapy to include somatic and relational components . . . Collaboration as the path to healing . . . I bring this frame to my practice of psychotherapy. If invited, I will join you in your search, as you find and open the doors that beckon to you, or that feel elusive. I am committed to social justice and deep ecology, and maintain awareness of the impacts of privilege, including my own, and systems of oppression on diverse identities and social locations.

Filial is when a parent has a child centered play therapy session with their child at home.
I work remotely with children 3-13 years old experiencing an emotional or behavioral hardship. I work with many populations, including but not limited to, children exhibiting high anxiety, see and/or hear things and post traumatic stress disorder. Play therapy can help process things so to help get unstuck, increase self awareness, increase self esteem and decrease anxiety. I also offer parent coaching as a part of our play therapy sessions. Parent coaching is offered as a separate entity as well. Video series on filial (parent learning to conduct play therapy at home) and a parenting tool series will soon be available.

I work with people in transition: issues that arise in the movement from childhood to adolescence, from home to college, from being single to being partnered, separation and divorce, and ways in which we relate throughout life towards work and loves. I will help you explore your conscious choices and their non-conscious sources and impacts from early experiences. I specialize in helping people of all ages move through traumatic events, and develop resilience skills. My work is primarily Psycho-dynamically and Neuro-dynamically based. I also pull from creative modalities such as art, play , and somatic therapy.
Deep thinkers, people who get excited about thoughts, and people who are looking to reconcile their truth and find their place in the world are all great fits for my counseling style. I love working with people who can be both silly, and dive deep when they know it will help them heal. Chronic illnesses, disability, LGBTQIA, Neurodiversity—folks who process information and communicate differently than most others—are a few of my specialty areas. I also work with people who are looking to understand themselves in new ways after big changes—accidents, illnesses, diagnoses or suspected diagnoses, and other big transitions.

Play Therapy

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
