I am here for you if you face challenges related to anger, loss, trauma, ADHD, neurodiversity, anxiety, dissociation, compulsion, and depression. I also work with life transitions generally, including education, employment, and retirement. Therapeutic approaches I use include CBT, DBT, feeling/somatic-based therapy, Jungian psychology, and interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB). Before becoming a therapist, I wrote a dozen books on programing and math, worked in software development, and taught college math, programming, and literature. I enjoy bicycle rides and literature studies, activities that I draw from as a therapist.

I work with people navigating relationship patterns, personality dynamics, and the parts of life that don't respond to ordinary advice - the recurring conflicts, the high-functioning exhaustion, the sense that something underneath needs to shift but you can't quite name it. Most of what brings people to therapy isn't actually located inside the individual. It lives in a system - a couple, a family, a group, an organization, a culture - and the person carrying the symptom is often the one most attuned to what the system can't yet metabolize.

My passion in psychotherapy is working with adults who struggle with behavioral and mental health issues, including trauma, anxiety, ADHD and a variety of personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and addictions.
Another passion is to support patients with cancer and their families. I am a cancer survivor, and I was the caretaker of my husband who had cancer. Although cancer treatment continues to advance, dealing with cancer is very scary and stressful. While we crave normalcy, life before and after cancer treatment are often very different as you find a new normal.

My goal is to walk alongside you on your journey and provide the support you need on the journey. There is no judgement based on diagnosis or background. I have spent most of my clinician career working with those with severe mental illness diagnosis or requiring residential mental health treatment. For those transitioning from that setting it is hard to find a clinician and one of my goals is to be able to walk alongside those in transition from residential or intensive mental health treatment as they re-integrate back home.

By the time most couples find me, they’ve already tried communicating better, learning new skills, reading the books, or even previous therapy. Yet the same painful pattern keeps returning. The real question isn’t how to stop the conflict—it’s understanding what’s organizing it. Once that becomes visible, the relationship starts making sense.

Transformation only happens in relationship. The absence of a relational home for transformation generally leads to superficial temporary changes. We make ourselves stuck by building walls of protection around us, which probably made perfect sense at the time. However, walls of protection eventually become walls of constriction. These walls lead us to the illusion of having no choices in our situation, to the belief that life is happening to us, instead of what is true, that we are living our lives and making choices of how we live life.

As a therapist who specializes in working with teenagers, I understand how important it is for parents to have confidence in the person they entrust with their child's mental health. Adolescence is a challenging time for both teens and parents, and it can be difficult to navigate the emotional and behavioral changes that come with this stage of life. That's why I take a collaborative approach to counseling, working closely with both parents and teens to develop personalized treatment plans that address their unique needs and concerns.

Starting an inner journey on a path to self-healing and understanding can seem like a daunting task. It can be confusing, often goes against logic, and opens us up to the very things that caused us to retreat from a full life in the first place. I understand the trepidation that comes from starting on such a journey and the various obstacles that arise during this exploration. This journey does not have to be taken alone.

"My mind is always racing, leaving me drained and overwhelmed." "Carrying this invisible weight makes it hard to find joy in anything." "The memories from my past still feel raw, no matter how much time passes." Healing begins with acceptance—allowing yourself to acknowledge the hurt and honor your journey instead of pushing it away. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or trauma, therapy creates a space to hold your experiences with compassion and to turn them into sources of growth and healing.

What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?
Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.
When to seek treatment for personality disorders?
Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.
How long does therapy take for personality disorders?
The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specializes in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.
Can therapy help people with personality disorders?
Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
