Parenting Therapists in Boulder, CO

I teach polyvagal skills for nervous system regulation and weave in play therapy and specialized attachment techniques to strengthen the parent/child bond.
I help clients of all ages process and heal from traumatic experiences- these are things that happened earlier in life that overwhelmed the nervous system and may have created false, negative beliefs about oneself, others, and the world. Beliefs like “I’m not good enough, I can’t trust people; I'm not safe” can significantly impact how a person feels, thinks and reacts, and lead to issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By healing trauma, we put the past in the past and transform negative beliefs into positive ones allowing clients to experience more joy, ease, and connection in their lives.

I primarily work with children, adolescents and young adults, as well as adults in regards to their parenting and relationship concerns.
Maybe your child can’t sleep at night, because they are worried about divorce, making or losing friends, or being good at their favorite hobby. Maybe they have intense feelings of anxiety or dread that they are not truly loved for who they are, or they worry they are a bad person inside. Perhaps you are worried that despite all your efforts, your children are struggling and you can’t figure out how to reach them. Meanwhile, you all desire deeper connection, love and belonging in your relationships and your family.

In addition, having worked in in-patient treatment for chemical dependency and mood disorders, I decided to teach parenting classes and offer parent coaching as primary prevention, to help parents raise children to make healthier choices.
I have several passions: 1) I help women struggling with depression and self esteem, especially as they age, to find meaning in their lives. 2) I help parents raise kids who will want to come home for Thanksgiving...and you'll want to see them. 3) I help parents who have made a decision not to work to be full-time stay-at-home parents feel confident and validated in their choice. There is no more important work than successfully raising the next generation. 4) I help seniors dealing with aging issues, depression, and addictions. 5) I help all adults dealing with addictions, depression, and anxiety.

I've been a psychologist for 30 years, but I've been a parent for 26, and counting.
You know your child best. Together we can help them get through their current difficulties. I use a range of treatment modalities from family therapy to synergetic play therapy to psychodynamic relational therapy. I'm fascinated by the ways our bodies both keep track of past struggles, but can also lead us to live healthier and more authentic lives.

Are you a pregnant or new mom coping with tough decisions, grief, parenting issues, or life changes?
At times, everyone can benefit from taking a step back to reflect on hard situations, heal from a challenge, discuss feelings, or understand patterns at a deeper level. Even after a few sessions, you may notice feeling lighter, feeling less alone, having more energy, or getting movement around an issue that previously felt stuck.

What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
