I've been a psychologist for 30 years, but I've been a parent for 27, and counting.
You know your child best. Together we can help them get through their current difficulties. I use a range of treatment modalities from family therapy to synergetic play therapy to psychodynamic relational therapy. I'm fascinated by the ways our bodies both keep track of past struggles, but can also lead us to live healthier and more authentic lives.

As a play therapist and parent resource, I help parents have more harmonious and enjoyable relationships with their children.
Research shows play therapy can help children learn: to respect themselves and others, identify their feelings and that their feelings are acceptable, self-control, to assume responsibility for self, to be creative and resourceful in confronting problems, self-direction, self-acceptance, and to make responsible choices.

I am passionate about helping parents find steadiness, confidence, and compassion within the beautifully challenging journey of raising young children.
Welcome! I am a somatic psychotherapist who believes that lasting change begins with cultivating a loving, nurturing relationship with all parts of ourselves—especially the ones we fear, reject, or feel disconnected from. By gently embracing our present-moment experience and listening for the deeper wisdom within, we open the door to healing, empowerment, and authentic growth. Even in the midst of suffering, there is always a path toward light and freedom. I work with individuals navigating: digestive health challenges; grief, anxiety and depression; and the complex dynamics of family addiction and recovery.

Hello and Welcome! My name is Shawn Perkin. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Mindfulness Meditation Instructor here in Boulder, Colorado. I have been providing father support here in Boulder County for the past 20 years! Becoming and being a father can often be both the most rewarding and the most challenging part of our lives. Balancing the requests and demands of our partners, children, employers, society and even ourselves oftentimes leaves us fathers feeling overworked, under appreciated, and even isolated; not knowing which direction to turn and rarely daring to ask for help.

I primarily work with children, adolescents and young adults, as well as adults in regards to their parenting and relationship concerns.
Maybe your child can’t sleep at night, because they are worried about divorce, making or losing friends, or being good at their favorite hobby. Maybe they have intense feelings of anxiety or dread that they are not truly loved for who they are, or they worry they are a bad person inside. Perhaps you are worried that despite all your efforts, your children are struggling and you can’t figure out how to reach them. Meanwhile, you all desire deeper connection, love and belonging in your relationships and your family.

Many people come to this work when anxiety, depression, substance use concerns, relationship challenges, or major life transitions start to feel unmanageable, or when they notice themselves stuck in repeating patterns. There’s often overwhelm, exhaustion, or a quiet awareness that something needs to change but uncertainty about how to begin. The work is relational, honest, and practical- focused on understanding patterns, building emotional regulation and communication skills, and creating concrete changes that actually hold in daily life so things feel more steady, connected, and workable.

2) I help parents raise kids who will want to come home for Thanksgiving
I sought training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy in response to my mother's death by suicide at age 69 to learn about treatment for depression to protect myself and learn how to help others. CBT also taught me how to reverse low self-esteem in myself and in others. I also use Brainspotting to help clients access unprocessed trauma in their subcortical brain.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
