Have you ever felt an internal conflict? Feeling dysregulated can cripple one's ability to function. Maybe one part of you wants to go out and have fun, while another insists you stay home and work. This internal conflict is more common than you might think. Understanding these different parts of yourself can lead to profound changes in one's life. This concept identifies and validates that we have various internal parts. Calming the internal storm allows space and clarity to handle the external challenges. Internal healing unburdens the past traumas and experiences that cause depression and discouragement.

When you wake up in the morning, is the first thing that pops into your mind a four-letter word? I effin' get it. Grief, trauma, and major life changes can knock the wind out of you and make even basic days feel heavy. You don’t have to carry that alone. I specialize in working with adults and teens navigating loss, emotional overwhelm, and the feeling that life no longer looks the way it was “supposed” to.

The men and couples I work with are often struggling beneath the surface of success, numbness, or shame. Many carry unresolved relational trauma, experience low self-worth masked by overperformance or withdrawal, or feel stuck in patterns of codependency or compulsive behaviors. They may be facing the breakdown of a relationship and don’t know how to show up differently. What they want is clarity, connection, and control over their own behavior. They’re tired of pretending, managing, or avoiding. Deep down, they’re longing for intimacy that doesn’t cost them their integrity, and strength that doesn’t require shutting down emotions.

My clinical specialties include men's issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, EMDR, attachment issues, and life transitions.
As a psychotherapist I specialize in working with men, athletes, and adolescents who are experiencing issues as such anxiety, trauma, and depression . I believe that for change to occur, there must be a strong foundation of trust, and safety in the therapeutic relationship. I aim to cultivate healing relationships with my clients in which they can grow from these pillars to experiment with new ways of being. I view change as arising from increased awareness of our physical and emotional experience and I strive to help others develop these areas through the cultivation of mindfulness, authenticity, and openness.

A seed grows with no sound, but a tree falls with huge noise. Destruction has noise, but creation is quiet. This is the power of silence. Grow silently. - Confucius... To grow silently means to go within, to be aware, to have courage in the face of fear. If you're struggling with addiction, trauma, grief, anxiety/depression, boundaries and learning to be assertive or trying to find your meaning and purpose in world filled with noise. Then perhaps I can be of help.

Hello and Welcome! My name is Shawn Perkin. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Mindfulness Meditation Instructor here in Boulder, Colorado. I have been providing father support here in Boulder County for the past 20 years! Becoming and being a father can often be both the most rewarding and the most challenging part of our lives. Balancing the requests and demands of our partners, children, employers, society and even ourselves oftentimes leaves us fathers feeling overworked, under appreciated, and even isolated; not knowing which direction to turn and rarely daring to ask for help.

It takes courage and humility to seek out a therapist. If your own life, your romantic relationship, or both are leaving you unsatisfied, stuck, or unhappy, I commend you for considering outside help. The support of people whom I trust and who care for me – including my own therapists – has been instrumental to my own healing and growth. I would be honored to provide you with that same partnership in your journey of change. When we combine my training in therapy with your knowledge of who you are and where you want to go, we can identify meaningful goals together and help you progress toward them.

You may be struggling with depression, anxiety, or addiction and seeking insight into this life journey you are on. Perhaps you seek to understand the complex tapestry your life has become in order to find healing for the pain you have always carried, or maybe you’re struggling with a lack of direction or low self-esteem. I also guide people through the loss that accompanies life transitions, including the death of a loved one, a career change, or another transition such as midlife, empty-nest, divorce, or health recovery.

You’ve been carrying a lot for a long time. On the outside, you keep it together; on the inside, it’s anxiety, numbness, self-doubt, or anger you don’t fully understand. You might be replaying old patterns in relationships, work, or with yourself and feeling stuck. My clients want more than coping skills—they want real change. Together we’ll slow down, make sense of what’s happening inside, and build a steadier, more honest way of living.

You’ve been showing up, doing what’s expected, keeping things together yet something still feels off. You feel stuck, disconnected, unsure of what’s next, or who you are beneath expectations. Maybe you’ve lost touch with what makes you feel alive, or you’re realizing old patterns and belief systems aren’t working anymore. You want clarity, direction, and a deeper sense of meaning in your life and relationships.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
