One of my gifts is being able to see a person’s light even when they cannot see it themselves. If you find yourself blocked from your own inner-wisdom and light, I’m here to help. Perhaps you find yourself overwhelmed by trauma, grief, hurt, or other challenging life experiences. Perhaps you find your blocks manifesting as depression , anxiety, disordered eating, body image struggles, disconnection from others and yourself, or relationship issues. Perhaps you find yourself asking, “Isn’t life supposed to be more beautiful and free than this?”

As a contemplative based psychotherapist, I offer a range of modalities to support through depression , anxiety, and trauma.
Sometimes daily challenges grow to feel like they are actively holding you back. These once manageable internal blocks and environmental influences can be hard to name and even harder to break through. But there is also something calling you to reconnect and take strong steps towards truly living. The root of my work is to help you Define Your Duende -- the inherent fire that sparks your own authentic expression and inspired experience. Through talk therapy and varying modalities, we can collaboratively build a dynamic therapeutic approach that utilizes your strengths and engages your specific struggles.

Some of the areas I work with include anxiety, depression , PTSD, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, grief, chronic health issues, life transitions, academic life issues, cultural identity issues.
You really want to enjoy life but everything seems daunting. You feel stuck, overwhelmed and confused. Life can be challenging but you do not have to go through this alone. My first aim in therapy is to create a space where you feel safe and heard. Together we embark on a journey of greater insight to understand what is holding you back and to create possibilities for change. I see therapy as a collaborative process: I bring my skills and experience, and you bring your whole self, your strengths and vulnerabilities, your fears and desires. My goal is to help you live a full and meaningful life in a way that feels true to YOU.

Trying to be a happy, healthy, creative human in today’s world requires new skills to face new challenges. Overwhelming anxiety, depression , and relationship instability are often products of our ancient nervous system struggling to adapt to an environment with new rules, new pressures, and old wounds. As a species we are subjected to increasing pressure to perform, produce, and project a life that is at once effortless and perfect. The reality is far from this however, and humans need support, love, and patience in the face of failure in order to thrive.

The inside of your head is a battlefield. Stressful thoughts surround you on all sides. Painful memories cling to you and still fill you with all those old emotions at the least convenient times. Anxiety tries to scare you away from moving towards what matters most to you. Depression saps your energy, motivation, and sense of purpose. Anger flares out of control and leads you to do or say things you regret later. A coping mechanism offers you temporary relief, but ultimately leaves you feeling worse than before. Worst of all, your inner critic tells you that you deserve all this suffering.

Every client I have worked with wants some RELIEF! Something has become too much, too painful, too off, too frustrating or too dull and they want or recognize they need change. Maybe there is a sense the tried-and-true methods of the past won’t create the necessary change and that some consistent professional help is needed. In short, if you want less of the bothering symptoms like anxiety, depression , challenges in relationships or self-defeating behaviors, and more vitality, positivity, depth, and a sense of meaning in your life, please reach out!

I view Depression and Anxiety as reasonable responses to what is happening in your life, and how your heart, mind and body is handling it all.
I am a therapist in private practice. I provide individuals, couples, families, and groups with telehealth sessions, reflection emails (letters written about our therapeutic conversation between meeting times), and Therapeutic Ceremony construction and facilitation. I have developed a very relational approach to counseling starting with wilderness therapy and moving through a master’s degree in Couples and Family Therapy. I work from a Narrative Therapy lens through which I see people as whole beings who struggle with messy human experiences in an oft broken world. I offer free initial consultations, call or email today!

I am committed to freeing the blockages in your life, relationships, passions and work. I support individuals & couples using mindfulness, somatic and experiential techniques that access deeper material than is usually accessed through traditional talk therapy alone. I have substantial experience working with anxiety, trauma, grief, depression and relationship issues. It takes true courage to reach out for support but finding the right support is even more important. Because the most important factor in success in therapy is the personal relationship we have with each other, I see this work as a mutual process we co-create together.

For years I have worked with clients who are moving through major life transitions and grief, or working with depression , anxiety, or psychological trauma. When we suffer from distress, I believe we are simply "forgetting" our natural wisdom and the fundamental health that lies beneath our outward problems. Underlying my work is a essential belief that our soul is on a journey in this human body, and we are here to learn deep lessons and celebrate the gift of being human - this implies my optimistic view of human psychological distress.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
