Filial is when a parent has a child centered play therapy session with their child at home.
I work remotely with children 3-13 years old experiencing an emotional or behavioral hardship. I work with many populations, including but not limited to, children exhibiting high anxiety, see and/or hear things and post traumatic stress disorder. Play therapy can help process things so to help get unstuck, increase self awareness, increase self esteem and decrease anxiety. I also offer parent coaching as a part of our play therapy sessions. Parent coaching is offered as a separate entity as well. Video series on filial (parent learning to conduct play therapy at home) and a parenting tool series will soon be available.

Research shows play therapy can help children learn: to respect themselves and others, identify their feelings and that their feelings are acceptable, self-control, to assume responsibility for self, to be creative and resourceful in confronting problems, self-direction, self-acceptance, and to make responsible choices.
Are you worried that your preschooler's abrupt mood swings will be a problem when she enters kindergarten? Is your third grader easily frustrated, teary and self-deprecating over an inability to get things right? Are you discouraged because of your fourth grader's consistently angry and disrespectful behavior? Raising a child with difficult behaviors can be exhausting. . . As a play therapist and parent resource, I help parents have more harmonious and enjoyable relationships with their children .

I enjoy working with challenging adolescents, young adults, couples, parents of any age children , and families of all descriptions.
My approach is direct, supportive and caring. I believe that effective psychotherapy is based upon mutual curiosity and genuineness in discovering how to meet life’s challenges - including family issues, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. The path through these difficulties includes facing them with humor, gentleness and bravery. The fruition of this exploration is a greater awareness of self and an appreciation of others.

It's not easy to seek help for your child . I've been there. I've been a psychologist for 28 years, but I've been a parent for 24, and counting. As a child and family psychologist, I help young families develop skills and routines to support healthy relationships for years to come. Play therapy allows children to integrate difficult experiences, and move past the stuck points in which they (and their parents) often find themselves. And it even works to do it virtually!

I use Synergetic Play Therapy for children and PACT for couples.
Starting the healing process is challenging and takes courage. Within all of us is a drive or desire to become whole, happy and connected to our self and our world. I see the importance of integrating all parts and aspects of our Self and becoming more whole and complete human beings. This journey into wholeness in the realization of our potential, underpins our personal journey of transformation and healing. This philosophy is at the core of my approach.

You holding onto your parenting guilt does not serve your child .
I help children feel more expansion in their emotionality so that they are able to break the cycles of self-doubt and move forward with their innate wisdom and their natural curiosities. In the old-paradigm, we have been faced with imbalances, pressures, restrictions and tensions especially in school. Some children thrive in the current system. Others have a more outside of the box way of learning. By honoring our deepest truths, we prepare for the world we are creating. Kids are looking for their own unique outlets to express their needs. We work together to embody and discover choices that make the most sense for who they are!

I am hear to tell you that your child is a world changer, full of deep wisdom.
Is your kiddo lacking confidence, overwhelmed by their emotions, yet you know deep inside there is a magical human just waiting to be discovered? I work with children who are highly intellectual, empathic, and feeling beings who oftentimes have been targeted by schools, peers, and teachers as being the "problem." The truth is they are not the problem and you know this, but yet their everyday functioning is being hindered. Getting to school or having play dates often seems like more of a challenge for you than the other families you know.

Does your child have worries and fears, social anxiety, or reluctance being away from you? Do you or your child experience intrusive anxious thoughts or engage in ritualistic behaviors? Do you worry too much or avoid situations that make you uncomfortable? Anxiety is very common in children , teens, and adults. Two out of ten children experience anxiety that is significant enough to interfere with their lives. Exposure therapy, a type of CBT, has been shown to be the most effective therapy for anxiety. Learning and practicing mindfulness skills can also be very helpful for children , teens, and adults with anxiety.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
