Anger Management Therapists in Boulder, CO
In my years of doing this work, I have seen the biggest challenge for clients is in making that first appointment. The problems we face in life are difficult. The hurts we feel, impede our ability to problem-solve. I do not proclaim to have all the answers, but I truly love working with clients to find solutions that fit their situation. In my practice I utilize both Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy modalities to undergird my client-centered approach. Together we will explore and challenge the thoughts and actions that contribute to problems, along with developing a plan for practicing new ways of thinking.

I specialize in working with adult clients who deal with attachment issues, depression, trauma, anger, anxiety, grief/loss, and relationship issues.
Starting an inner journey on a path to self-healing and understanding can seem like a daunting task. It can be confusing, often goes against logic, and opens us up to the very things that caused us to retreat from a full life in the first place. I understand the trepidation that comes from starting on such a journey and the various obstacles that arise during this exploration. This journey does not have to be taken alone.

Our life journeys are unique to us all. New experiences are awaiting us in every new direction we take; I believe that there is never a wrong path. I base my therapeutic approach on the belief that we all are good at heart, worthy, and capable of making the right choices for ourselves. Even though we can't always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond. I believe the way we handle the tough things life throws at us - loss, hardship, adversity, rejection—is what defines each of us as a human.

To speak of one’s experience can open the door to self-examination and potential change. By giving voice to thoughts that are otherwise left unsaid, it’s possible to both articulate one’s pain and find ways out of suffering. As a clinician, I seek to give each individual room to speak freely and openly about their experience of life, without offering prescriptive solutions to unique concerns.

Hi there! I am a psychologist with over 20 years of experience in the field. My experience has allowed me to bring a deeper perspective to situations, and I know the value of giving that feedback to my clients. I utilize a variety of approaches like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), Solution-Focused, Psychodynamic and Existential therapies. I had a thriving practice in the San Francisco Bay Area, but chose to live in beautiful and active Boulder instead. However, I'm licensed in Colorado, California and any PsyPact state (42 states).

I think of my role as your therapist like the wind that bends the willows at high elevation — helping you grow stronger and more flexible over time. I’m here to support you in building the life you want, always taking care to move at the speed of trust. I’ve worked in wilderness therapy, residential settings, intensive outpatient programs, and private/group practices, and what I’ve learned is that healing happens through genuine connection — between you and me, between you and yourself, and in your community. I focus on collaboration and creating space for honest, sometimes challenging conversations, always with respect and care.

As a psychotherapist with 30 years of experience, I approach therapy from an empathic relational orientation. It is very important my clients feel heard and validated with a sense of security as they explore their experiences of both suffering and success. I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an evidenced based psychotherapy treatment to help improve communication with others, reduce fears and phobias, interrupt thoughts that lead to addictive and other self destructive behaviors, improve self esteem and change negative thought patterns.

It takes courage to enter into therapy and be vulnerable with someone you do not know. Therapy should be a sacred place to talk about the things that are difficult to talk about and feel difficult emotions. You want to know that you are safe to let go of your armor and you will be seen and heard without judgement. If you're looking for support through a challenging situation, improve your relationship, or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you.

How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
