I have devoted my career to helping children, adolescents, and adults heal from anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, and loss. I have extensive training in trauma, particularly working with children, adolescents, and families whose lives are affected by physical abuse, sexual abuse, family violence, neglect, bullying, and attachment issues related to adoption . I value the importance of working with the whole family system to heal from trauma, improve mental wellness, and adjust to changes in the family dynamic. My treatment is aimed at strengthening the parent-child relationship, and assessing the strengths and areas of growth within the caregiver/child dyad.

I have led trainings on Resilience, Trauma and Secondary-trauma, as well as Developmental transitions and Adoption issues.
I work with people in transition: issues that arise in the movement from childhood to adolescence, from home to college, from being single to being partnered, separation and divorce, and ways in which we relate throughout life towards work and loves. I will help you explore your conscious choices and their non-conscious sources and impacts from early experiences. I specialize in helping people of all ages move through traumatic events, and develop resilience skills. My work is primarily Psycho-dynamically and Neuro-dynamically based. With children, I frequently use play-therapy as a primary modality.

Play therapy is the research-based treatment of choice for children struggling with: anxiety and withdrawn behavior, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Reactions, trauma, abuse and neglect, chronic or terminal illness, hospitalization, adoption and foster-care, grief, divorce, family violence, aggression and acting out behavior.
Are you worried that your preschooler's abrupt mood swings will be a problem when she enters kindergarten? Is your third grader easily frustrated, teary and self-deprecating over an inability to get things right? Are you discouraged because of your fourth grader's consistently angry and disrespectful behavior? Raising a child with difficult behaviors can be exhausting. . . As a play therapist and parent resource, I help parents have more harmonious and enjoyable relationships with their children.

I have raised a family and have personal and professional experience with single parenting, step families and adoption .
My approach is direct, supportive and caring. I believe that effective psychotherapy is based upon mutual curiosity and genuineness in discovering how to meet life’s challenges - including family issues, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. The path through these difficulties includes facing them with humor, gentleness and bravery. The fruition of this exploration is a greater awareness of self and an appreciation of others.

Reyka's experience involves complex trauma, attachment & relationship issues, anxiety & other mood disorders, adoption -related trauma, & rebuilding skills related to relaxation and stress management.
Dr. Jessica Reyka, Psy.D., the founder and owner of Grass Roots Healing, LLC, is a firm believer that in order to reconnect and heal, we must first go back to the "root" of the problem or concern, which often stems far back into one's life, and then work towards healing from an inward-out approach. "The stronger our roots are, the more beautiful the leaves that come from the tree"; similar to the process of therapy where we rebuild the foundation from which you view the world and create a life/beliefs/behaviors that are more in alignment with your true values and authentic self.

If you are a parent, struggling with your young child's big, baffling behaviors, I am here to help. If you have tried All. The. Things: every sticker chart, consequence, love and logic approach, boundaries, time outs & more and nothing has helped, then let's try something new. We need to go beyond the outdated, ineffective behavior management approach. It doesn't work. And together, I know that we can tip the balance, so that your parenting experience is less stressful, with less resistance, defiance, and overwhelm, to one that is filled with more joy, connection and ease. It is possible.

Being a woman can be magical and empowering. It can also be exhausting. As women we navigate the many pressures of our every day lives. We can get lost in the day to day aspects of motherhood, being a partner, a friend, daughter and trying to uphold a career. Meanwhile our dreams and longing for more often take a backseat and get lost in the shuffle. In every woman, there is a voice that begs to be heard and a story that desires to be lived. Living a life in your own wild freedom is not something you need to wait to do someday. What would life look like if you listened to Her now?

As humans, our desire for connection and belonging is innate, healthy and our birthright. Too often, parts of us seem to sabotage our relationships and peace of mind by utilizing old learned patterns, meant to protect, but now limiting our fullest expressions of love and security. When we explore, honor and understand the origins of these parts and turn toward them with compassion, we offer ourselves the opportunity to integrate and heal old wounds, to live and love in the present, informed by, but not limited by the past. I assist individuals and couples in transforming themselves and their relationships.

Horses have an innate sense of the suffering of their herd. They are hyper-attuned to the needs of others around them. When I work with my horses they are able to pick up on the underlying needs and desires of my clients. They know when you are feeling angry, isolated, or restless. The horses are able to attune to your emotions while I help you to put those feelings into words and do the necessary work to solve life's challenges. Together, we will embark on a journey of self-discovery.

Our world, our relationships, and our minds often present us with challenges too difficult to work out on our own. These challenges can bar us from intimate contact with ourselves and others. They often take over our life, or makes certain parts of it unbearable. And if you are seeking out ways to work with them, I whole-heartedly salute you. My counseling is client-centered, mindfulness-based, and attachment-informed. This means that you choose what we work on, I help you to explore it in the present moment, and we use the power of relationship and care in that exploration.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
