Are you a 10- to 24-year-old Autistic, ADD/ADHDer, or Highly Sensitive Person? Does your identity intersect with the LGBTQ+, BIPOC, or EMM/Poly communities? Have you tried talk therapy only to feel misunderstood, judged and more confused? I would love to support your healing journey. I use a nervous system's perspective that can provide relief from suffering faster than traditional talk therapy. You'll learn coping tools and techniques to get out of fight/flight/freeze patterns. I've found this model extremely successful for sensory neurodivergent people, and I hope you'll consider trying it.

If you struggle with mastering your circumstances, they may end up mastering you. This is a reality we all face, but the time and effort required to do so can be overwhelming. My experience is centered around neurodivergent populations who struggle with anxiety and executive functioning. I view each client with holistic, person-centered views of a unique and complex individual rather than just a diagnosis. As an abstract thinker, I specialize in helping you tie the pieces together in a new, autonomous and empowering way. I strive to be genuine and collaborative in sessions-- come talk to me about anything, I would love to listen!

The inside of your head is a battlefield. Stressful thoughts surround you on all sides. Painful memories cling to you and still fill you with all those old emotions at the least convenient times. Anxiety tries to scare you away from moving towards what matters most to you. Depression saps your energy, motivation, and sense of purpose. Anger flares out of control and leads you to do or say things you regret later. A coping mechanism offers you temporary relief, but ultimately leaves you feeling worse than before. Worst of all, your inner critic tells you that you deserve all this suffering.

I have been providing individual therapy to children, adolescents, collage age young adults and parents throughout the Boulder & Denver area's since 1995. My counseling style and therapeutic approach are unique and innovative. By using a less traditional style of therapy, I have been able to connect with and help people and families that have not found conventional therapy productive or beneficial or have found traditional therapy to have not met their needs. I use a strength-based, solution-focused, cognitive-behavioral therapy approach which is designed to treat issues that arise in our individual lives, personal relationships and families.

Not small enough, not good enough, not strong enough, not simple enough… It can be exhausting and lonely to feel like you’re constantly falling short. My goal is to provide clients caring, concrete, and practical answers using proven-effective treatment options. I feel strongly that clients should be a collaborator in their treatment and see improvements quickly. Parents with children who have behavioral problems are often exhausted and at the end of their rope. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy provides quick solutions and reduces parental stress. Couples often seek therapy when communication is breaking down. Both PCIT and Gottman Method Therapy inform my work with couples and families.

Life is full of change, transition, and growth. Throughout these shifts in our experience, we return to intrinsic patterns of behavior to help us navigate, pull through, or survive. Often times, these strategies do not fit our current experience. The feedback we receive from partners, friends, work, or the world feels confusing. I work with clients to tease out the behaviors that present as stressors within the phases in our life process. I work to meet each individuals' needs, and utilize a strengths based approach to support self-esteem development, aid in the therapeutic process, and arrive closer to the authentic self.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years of more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
