Inner exploration is one of the most extraordinary journeys one can undertake; a journey that requires enormous courage and curiosity to explore the unknown. It is with sensitivity and kindness that I join you in this work. The desire to seek therapy is often catalyzed by suffering or discord in our lives; a sense that something is out of alignment. As a result we feel anxiety, depression,
grief
, challenges in relationships, even crisis. Among other issues, I work with individual adults, couples and adolescents exploring issues related to life transitions, trauma,
grief
(
death
, dying,
bereavement
), relationships, and spiritual emergence/y.

You’ve had a big
loss
- a
death
, identity, home, your rights, a relationship, etc. The pain is unimaginable. At times it feels impossible to face. Distractions used to work well enough, but life feels out of control and you’re exhausted. You're your own worst critic. You'd never talk to others the way you talk to yourself. From the outside looking in, you’ve got it “together", but it's hard to let people know the real you-even though you want to connect. Worries hijack your focus and ability to relax and even sleep. You move from being on edge to feeling numb and checked out. Life is a roller coaster and you want to feel balance.

Life can be very stressful, especially today in our fast-paced, post-COVID world. You may be trying to make sense of what you are feeling. Maybe you are experiencing anxiety or depression. Maybe you are a parent feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Possibly you have experienced a
loss
of some kind. A loved one, a job, a home, your health, or any other
loss
. Unexpressed
grief
can complicate your emotional wellness. In the words of William Shakespeare: “Give sorrow words; the
grief
that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break.” Telling your story can help you move through the pain and suffering.

For years I have worked with clients who are moving through major life transitions and
grief
, or working with depression, anxiety, or psychological trauma. When we suffer from distress, I believe we are simply "forgetting" our natural wisdom and the fundamental health that lies beneath our outward problems. Underlying my work is a essential belief that our soul is on a journey in this human body, and we are here to learn deep lessons and celebrate the gift of being human - this implies my optimistic view of human psychological distress.

Areas of interest include: adoption, anxiety, coaching,
grief
and
loss
, life transitions, trauma events (past and present) and crisis work.
I strive to provide a safe and therapeutic space for individuals to work on a variety of issues. I believe that each of us has inherent abilities to heal and live a successful and balanced life. A therapist or counselor's role is to use learned skills and therapeutic modalities in an empathic voice to assist individuals in overcoming the obstacles in their life. My goal is to have that person feel mentally and emotionally healthy AND to thrive. I hope to help you unlock that potential within yourself using such modalities as general psychotherapy, art therapy, EMDR, DBT and mindfulness-based psychotherapy.

My approach with clients is relational, somatic/body-centered and trauma-resilience informed - trusting that
grief
is a natural part of our soulfully lived lives. I provide a strong container, attuned presence and deep listening, allowing threads of connection and meaning to be recognized and woven. Together, we identify and affirm capacities of resilience while turning toward how we are each called to grow and evolve into meaningful connection and service. I specialize in
grief
counseling, spiritual companioning, dreamwork, somatic and mindful awareness, and life transitions of all kinds, including illness and end of life.

Parents I work with have experiences that might include premature births and NICCU stays, medical challenges for parent/baby, birth trauma/fear,
loss
over not experiencing the birth that was planned, stillbirth, perinatal/postpartum depression, discrimination due to sexual orientation or gender expression, or
grief
from losing the little one you carried.
My passion is supporting parents who have experienced difficult births. Bringing another life into this world is an important and challenging experience. Whether you are the individual who gave birth or a witness, there can be immediate and/or lasting waves of physical and emotional difficulties that may effect your life. These paths are unique to each of us because every birth is important and impactful. My work is to listen and journey with you as you explore your birth story and the impacts it has had on your life. Although this is an area of focus, I work with adolescents and adults needing support in other areas of life.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
