I also utilize trauma informed interventions to support clients with acute and complex trauma resulting from domestic/dating violence; sexual assault ; & interpersonal violence.
I believe the central purpose of counseling is to assist the clients I work with in identifying their own unique abilities and tools to cope with the hurdles and challenges that life brings. Each individual has the capacity to make change happen to support well being; heal from trauma and identify new coping skills. My goal is to provide a safe space for individuals to work through traumatic or difficult life experiences while helping to cultivate new avenues to overcome the things that can keep one feeling "stuck". My approach in counseling is collaborative, holistic, strength based and client centered.

I have seen, supported, and served individuals who have been both victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse , domestic violence, suicide attempts, self-inflicted injury, abandonment, shame, neglect, and all associations of grief, loss, and fear.
Not many people can say, without a doubt, they know exactly where they are supposed to be. I am lucky enough to be one of the few. My place is walking through the fire with trauma survivors, sitting with people in their deepest pain, and if nothing more, holding space for anything that may come.

I specialize in anxiety, depression, past sexual abuse , low self confidence, trauma, life transitions and grief and loss.
We are not meant to live life in isolation. We innately crave deep meaningful relationships. I believe in helping people build healthy, deep lasting relationships and friendships. However, sometimes life happens. Attachment wounds surface. Trauma occurs. Life Transitions are inevitable. Depression and anxiety take over. These things keep us from enjoying the people and things we love. I take a holistic, evidenced based approach looking at past and present issues, as well as your emotional, physical, spiritual and mental state. I enjoy helping individuals overcome deep shame, insecurities and fears that they are not good enough.

Trauma & loss can take all different forms and sit in our body & mind in a variety of uncomfortable ways. In counseling survivors of sex trafficking, I have encountered very difficult stories & complex trauma. A common question I hear is “am I crazy?” due to the intense body & brain reactions manifested from the traumatic experiences, but there is a reason you are feeling that way. The desire to find freedom from the symptoms and the past is within reach. After working overseas, I also can understand how hard transitions, grief, & feeling out of place is like. Your goals are the priority in finding your foundation & stregnth.

I believe each of us has a unique inner light. However, some experiences we walk through over the course of our lives can progressively dull that light until we struggle finding our joy. I work with clients to identify and understand how past events in their lives may be influencing their current distress levels and to learn new ways of thinking and feeling about these events, accepting with love and integrating these new beliefs for a more body/mind experience.

I have over 30 years of experience and training. I provide a safe, non-judgmental place to heal, grow, learn and move through your challenges. I help you listen to your body and your heart. I enjoy and consider it a privilege to do this work. My philosophy is that the journey toward wholeness is sometimes hard but nevertheless worthwhile. To be truly alive one must learn to feel it all. We need to know how to respond to our pain and figure out what we need.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
