My sub-specialties around loss and grief include supportive counseling for individuals dealing with a life limiting illness, those in the helping professions dealing with personal death loss , adults who experienced a death loss when they were a child and parents who have experienced the death of a child.
Sometimes, we just want to find "home," that place within us that is our true self and that validates who we are and what we believe in but that often gets in conflict with others who want us to change in order to fit what they want us to be. I partner with my clients to help them find that place of home as they deal with life changes and transitions that may result in depression, anxiety, relationship issues, a search for purpose and meaning of a wish for personal growth.

My specialty lies in grief counseling.
I view our life journey as a collection of experiences that influence who we are and how we see the world. We often experience (and can expect) to deal with hurdles and roadblocks that can make some days unbearable. This is where counseling comes in. I love joining alongside others and empowering them to keep making steps when they don’t think they can. I will always admit to any client that counseling is hard and applaud anyone who takes the step to reflect inward and grow. My hope and main priority are to create a space where ALL individuals feel safe enough to be their authentic selves.

When we struggle to make sense of our experiences (due to depression, anxiety, grief / loss , abuse/trauma, relational conflicts or new life stressors), we may seek any semblance of control over our situation, grasping for understanding of all the "whys" or seeking resolution/answers to pacify the "what if's." Simultaneously, sense-making may seem inaccessible or impossible. At times, we need someone to hold on to the hope, cultivate space for us to explore & express our story while also learning new tools to navigate. I use a relational, trauma-focused and empathic approach, curiously asking questions while also empowering clients.

I am accepting new clients for both in-person and telehealth sessions. In life, we all encounter roadblocks, trauma, choices we wished we had not made, grief , loss , regret, and sometimes horrible events. These experiences can be exhausting especially when they get in the way of us returning to the person we were before an event happened or when we can't quite be the person we envisioned ourselves being.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
