The focus of my practice is on issues related to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and chronic pain and other physical health issues.
If you have been seeking solutions to problems without resolution, or you have tried therapy before without success, contact me to discuss a new path. People often look for ways to eliminate bad feelings, or ways to understand their past. You may have declared that you don't want certain things in your life; but as soon as you say that you don't want something the problems expand. I will work with you to find a workable solution - a way to live your life in accordance with your values, and to develop a willingness to be present in your life.

I specialize in helping Women with Chronic Illness and/or PTSD.
Right now everyone's world has turned upside down. Most people in your life don't know what you've really been dealing with. Some days you can barely get off the couch, much less shower. You are exhausted, but can't sleep. From the outside your life might look great, but you feel you are slowly disappearing, unsure who you used to be. Many women with Chronic Illness or PTSD feel this way most the time. Often we are afraid of being disbelieved by not only friends and family, but by our Health Care Team as well. It can take years before women are correctly diagnosed. In pain, with complicated symptoms it's easy to feel invisible.

We are a mental health practice that serves the Denver area specializing in neuropsychological, behavioral health, pain assessment and management, and other health concerns for children, adolescents, and adults.
Our approach utilizes the biopsychosocial approach to evaluation and treatment; this means we strive to understand the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence the health and wellness of our clients. Our services are often referred to as "behavioral medicine" or "medical psychology;" this is due to taking a holistic approach in our treatment considering the whole person - physical, mental, emotional, and social. We often work collaboratively with other professions such as primary care physicians, occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains, and others who are important to one's individual network of care.

Together, we will discover meaning and hope that transforms your pain into perseverance.
Your life has brought you to this moment. Uncertain if this is where you are supposed to be, if these feelings will last forever. Struggling with anxiety, you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. Life is not how you pictured it, but you just can’t seem to change the frame. You’ve spent hours, even days searching for answers, someone or something to help understand and resolve pain and grief. Today, you find yourself unable to cope with even the small things. Waking up tired, dragging throughout the day, lying awake at night. Restless, agitated, utterly exhausted. Trauma has you stuck in this chapter, and now is the time to turn the page.

Often our hurtful experiences are out of our control. You didn’t choose to live with pain. You are tired of feeling alone and misunderstood. The reality is our experiences and memories can shape our beliefs and worldviews, creating guilt, anxiety, shame, anger, and isolation. Living with chronic pain, illness, trauma, anxiety, and grief – does impact us. Even if you don’t feel like it at this very moment, there is part of you that knows they deserve something more, whether it’s self-compassion, healthy connections, pleasure, joy, or the chance to move from surviving to thriving. Let's get curious.

My clients are typically managing mental health issues and symptoms that develop in response to life changes, identity concerns, or responses to systems they belong to. This may look like transitioning to a new city, managing a new health diagnosis, or exploring their gender. The typical clients I work with have a shared goal of wanting to learn how to better support themselves in response to environmental and interpersonal concerns. They are motivated to develop skills and strengthen their self-awareness to get to a place where they are living a life that is aligned with who they see themselves as.

My name is Angie Lewis and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with people ages 15-99 and specialize in working with people who don’t feel they are living their best life. I also work with co-occurring disorders. This involves the presence of both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. My counseling style is a good fit for teens and adults who struggle with overthinking about life and relationships. This can cause anxiety and depression or a sense of existing but not really living a life.

Collaboratively, we focus on healing, resilience, and reconnection. Feeling ashamed is scary and overwhelming. These feelings are more common than we admit and stem from a variety of factors. It makes sense to respond to unpleasant emotions by burying, avoiding, or resisting. If unprocessed, these beliefs impact our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and lives--leaving us repeating painful patterns and shaping our perceptions and relationships with ourselves, others, and the world.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
