Feeling concerned about your own
substance use
or your loved one's

can be a lonely and uncomfortable place.
It can be scary when you first realize that your alcohol or drug use has gotten out of control, or when a loved one's use is starting to affect you in negative ways. You see how drug and alcohol use can impact different areas of your life, including things like your job and your relationships with your friends and family. Reaching out for help for the first time can be difficult, fearing that once you share the truth with someone you will be given nothing but judgment in return.

Do you have a stack of partially read self-help books collecting dust in the corner? Maybe you had hopes they would provide the information you were seeking to stay cool and collected through challenging times - because let’s face it, 2020 was pretty much a shitshow. It is alright to feel overwhelmed, confused, and uncertain. When stressors create intrusive thoughts of not being enough or fears of abandonment, it can be helpful to talk to someone. Whether you are looking for coping strategies to build resiliency through life transitions or wanting to explore deeper parts of yourself and how you relate to the world, I am here.

It seems like doing life got harder. Stress is prevalent, the room clears out. You feel overwhelmed, patience is low and checking out sounds like a good idea. Tired of trying to make everyone happy? Got friends? Love? Expressing confidence is difficult and you question yourself constantly. All of these can lead to depression, anxiety, unhealthy relationships and poor habits and addiction. But they don't have to cause suffering. There are many tools available to you that can help you problem solve, reduce anxious and depressive symptoms, improve relationships and even tools that you can start using right now to find love.

Just a few years ago I was caught up in a cycle of self-doubt, shame, and failure. I was early on in adulthood and already I felt completely worn out; convinced my life would end in ruins. Eventually I was able to seek counseling, and this became a major factor in helping me find a new sense of hope and freedom. I became a counselor out of a desire to share this gift with others. I seek to create a safe space where my clients can find new hope in their journey. When you walk into my office, I want you to know that you are welcome here; you belong, and you matter.

Life's challenges can feel dark, heavy, or even impossible to deal with. Most people who start therapy feel stuck repeating the same painful patterns. Do any of the following resonate with you? You fight all the time with your partner. Your energy levels are at an all time low. You feel dread, fear, strange thoughts, and a pounding heart. You wake up every morning feeling overwhelmed and depressed. It is possible to feel better. Imagine a life where you could...Control how you respond to anxious thoughts. Get to the root of problems and solve them instead of using band-aids. Have the loving relationships you've always wanted.

It takes courage to ask for help and seek out a therapist. Thank you for stopping by my profile. I believe that it is in relationship with others that we find healing from past and present hurts and that therapy is a wonderful way to make space for this healing. My counseling background includes working with children, adolescents, and adults, as well as families. My clients' goals often include wanting to understand why they "do what they do" in their lives and relationships, as well as how they can improve their relationships with themselves and others.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
